Robert Irwin performed all three dances in the Dancing with the Stars season 34 finale on November 25, 2025, despite rib pain he had described as progressively worsening. He and partner Witney Carson won the Len Goodman Mirrorball Trophy after adjusting their freestyle choreography to remove a trick that had hurt his ribs in rehearsal.
What Robert Irwin said about his rib pain
In a finale preview, Irwin said he had been dealing with rib pain and described the intercostal muscles around his ribs as being under tension. He also said the pain had been “getting worse progressively.” Those were Irwin’s on-air descriptions; the available reports do not establish a clinical diagnosis. Good Morning America’s November 26, 2025 recap reported his comments.
Why the freestyle choreography changed
Carson said the pair removed a trick after an attempt in rehearsal hurt Irwin’s ribs. The planned move involved other dancers tossing Carson so Irwin could catch her. After their win, Carson told ABC, “His health is my No. 1 priority.” ABC’s November 26, 2025 interview covered the adjustment and the partners’ post-finale comments.

The choreography change did not prevent the pair from performing all three rounds: a judge’s choice quickstep, an instant cha-cha, and a freestyle. Irwin and Carson won the season 34 trophy. ABC News Australia reported that Irwin scored 89 out of 90 points overall: 29 for the first dance and perfect scores for the final two. In a brief post-win comment, Irwin said, “It’s painful, but, you know, no pain, no gain, but it’s all good.” That was a remark about the experience, not medical advice. The reporting available on the finale does not establish a treatment or recovery timeline, or confirm a diagnosis beyond Irwin’s description of the pain.
