Kennedy, Jr. and the Dark Side of the Dream, published by St. Martin’s Press on September 22, 2015. People’s article summarized claims from the biography about Kennedy’s marriages to Emily Black, Mary Richardson, and Cheryl Hines. Its accounts of alleged infidelity and conduct toward Richardson should be understood as attributed claims, not independently established findings.
Which book did the headline refer to?
People’s September 15, 2015 article, “New Book Details Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s Troubled Marriages”, drew on Oppenheimer’s biography, RFK Jr.: Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. and the Dark Side of the Dream. The publisher’s Macmillan catalog entry confirms the author and title; the Google Books catalog lists publication by St. Martin’s Publishing Group on September 22, 2015.
The distinction matters: People was reporting what Oppenheimer’s biography said, including material attributed to the book’s sources and people described as friends or confidants. The accessible article does not provide a full evidence audit for every allegation.
What the account says about Kennedy’s marriages
Emily Black
People reports that Kennedy married Emily Black on April 3, 1982. The article’s account of the marriage includes allegations of infidelity drawn from Oppenheimer’s biography. Those allegations should remain attributed to the book and its sources rather than presented as independently verified facts.
#1 Best Overall
Mary Richardson
According to People’s summary of the biography, Kennedy proposed to Mary Richardson in 1993 while he was still married to Black. People says he and Richardson married in April 1994, after his divorce from Black. The biography’s reported descriptions of their relationship and Kennedy’s conduct are allegations, not findings established by the accessible coverage.
People reports that Richardson died by suicide in May 2012 and quotes Kennedy speaking at her funeral. The account does not establish that the divorce or any alleged conduct caused her death, and no such causal conclusion should be drawn from it.
Rank #2
Cheryl Hines
Kennedy married actor Cheryl Hines in 2014. A contemporaneous Los Angeles Times report dated August 4, 2014 says the wedding took place the preceding Saturday, August 2, at the Kennedy family compound in Hyannis Port, Massachusetts.

The People article combines a reported relationship chronology with claims about private behavior. The wedding dates and the identities of the spouses are presented as biographical facts; allegations about affairs, drug use, or treatment of Richardson are attributed accounts. The article does not include the underlying book’s full notes, interview records, documentary support, or responses that would allow readers to assess each claim independently.

People also characterizes a statement attributed to Kennedy through the book as referring to his “lust demons.” That wording is a quotation reported by the magazine, not an independently authenticated statement in the material available there. The same care applies to the funeral remarks People attributes to him: the accessible article does not identify a primary transcript or recording.

What the 2015 story establishes—and what it does not
- It identifies Oppenheimer’s 2015 biography as the book behind the headline and summarizes its claims.
- It gives a chronology covering Kennedy’s marriages to Black, Richardson, and Hines.
- The Hines wedding date is also supported by contemporaneous Los Angeles Times reporting.
- It does not independently substantiate every allegation or provide enough underlying material to resolve each one.
- It does not establish a causal link between Richardson’s death and the divorce or allegations described in the biography.
