His later work brought another major acting honor: the 2024 Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for Oppenheimer. That public chronology tells the story of a career; it should not be mistaken for a simple explanation of addiction or recovery.
How Downey’s career began—and why Chaplin mattered
Downey was acting from childhood. D23 describes him growing up among places where his parents worked and recalls his account that acting was part of everyday life; his film history began in a movie directed by his father. D23’s Robert Downey Jr. profile traces that early start.

His first major stretch of recognition culminated in Chaplin (1992), in which he portrayed Charlie Chaplin. The performance earned Downey his first Academy Award nomination, for Best Actor, as well as BAFTA recognition, according to D23 and the Television Academy. He later appeared in projects including Wonder Boys and the television series Ally McBeal. The Television Academy’s profile records his Oscar nomination and later television work.
What happened after Chaplin?
Downey’s career was interrupted by a prolonged addiction-related and legal crisis. The Associated Press reports a series of drug-related arrests and a year in prison after his first Oscar nomination. CBS News describes him as being in and out of rehab from 1996 to 2001, spending nearly a year in prison, and facing a period when studios would not hire him. These accounts establish a difficult public chronology, not a complete account of his private experience or a clinical explanation of addiction. CBS News’s 2010 retrospective and the AP’s report on his 2024 Oscar speech provide those reported details.

It is tempting to turn a comeback into a tidy moral lesson, but the evidence does not support attributing recovery to a single role, marriage, or moment of fame. Downey has publicly thanked his wife, Susan, and joked about his childhood during his 2024 Oscar acceptance speech, as the AP reported. Those remarks are part of his account at a public event, not proof that one factor explains a complicated personal history.
How did Robert Downey Jr. become Iron Man?
Downey’s casting as Tony Stark in Iron Man (2008) marked his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut and a decisive career turning point. D23 recounts director Jon Favreau’s description of the screen test: “It came down to Robert offering to do a screen test. And once we rolled the camera, it was inarguable. There was nobody who could say he was not Iron Man.” D23 also records Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige’s view of the film’s stakes: “We were hoping Iron Man would make enough money that we could make another film. If that film didn’t work, there would not be an MCU as we know it today.”
The commercial result reinforced the importance of the film without measuring anything about Downey’s personal well-being. CBS News reported in 2010 that the first Iron Man made $585 million worldwide; that is the historical figure reported by CBS at that time, not a current, independently updated gross.
Downey returned as Stark in the Iron Man sequels and in MCU ensemble films, continuing through Avengers: Endgame (2019). The role made him one of the franchise’s defining faces and brought extraordinary visibility to a career that had earlier been marked by critical recognition in smaller and varied roles. D23’s filmography traces those appearances.
From franchise stardom to later dramatic recognition
After his run as Tony Stark, Downey took the role of Lewis Strauss in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer (2023). At the 2024 Academy Awards, he won Best Supporting Actor—his first acting Oscar. The award connected his later career to the critical recognition that had begun with his Best Actor nomination for Chaplin, while recognizing a distinctly different performance.
His work has also extended beyond acting in feature films. Through Team Downey, he has worked as a producer. In the television series The Sympathizer, he played multiple supporting roles; the Television Academy records a 2024 Emmy nomination for that work. These projects show a career spanning performance, franchise filmmaking, production, and television rather than a story defined solely by one comeback role.
