Robert Downey Jr. was revealed as Doctor Doom at Marvel Studios’ Hall H presentation at San Diego Comic-Con in July 2024. The official account describes a dramatic onstage unmasking—not a detailed look at his finished film costume. Marvel and Disney identify his new role as Doctor Doom, while D23 names the character Victor von Doom; the official announcements cited here do not explain a connection to Tony Stark.
What did Robert Downey Jr. look like at the reveal?
Marvel’s official account says the presentation ended with robed figures wearing Doctor Doom masks. Downey appeared onstage and revealed himself as Doom. He said, “New mask, same task,” and, “What can I tell you? I like playing complicated character.” The second quotation reproduces the wording in D23’s event report.
That staging establishes what the live audience saw at the event. It does not, by itself, provide a full view or detailed description of the film costume. The official Disney film page identifies an image as “Victor von Doom/Doctor Doom (Robert Downey Jr.),” but its caption does not offer a costume breakdown. Claims about specific armor details, colors, scars, or mask design should not be treated as confirmed by these descriptions.
When was Robert Downey Jr. announced as Doctor Doom?
The announcement took place at the close of Marvel Studios’ Hall H presentation at San Diego Comic-Con in July 2024. Marvel’s event report describes Downey revealing himself onstage as Doctor Doom. It was a casting reveal, not a release of film footage.

Is Downey playing Doctor Doom or Iron Man?
Marvel described Doom as Downey’s “new role,” and D23’s 2025 cast announcement identifies the character as Victor von Doom. D23 also notes that Downey had starred in ten films as Tony Stark/Iron Man. The official announcements cited here do not explain why Doom shares Downey’s face or establish an in-story relationship between Victor von Doom and Stark. Treat theories about that connection as speculation unless Marvel confirms them.
When is Avengers: Doomsday scheduled to release?
Disney’s current film page lists Avengers: Doomsday for December 18, 2026. D23’s March 26, 2025 cast announcement listed May 1, 2026; that earlier date has since been superseded by the date on Disney’s current listing. Release schedules can change, so the current Disney page is the relevant official listing for present planning.
