Megan Fox’s 2009 criticism of director Michael Bay was followed by her absence from the third Transformers film. Bay later said Steven Spielberg told him to fire Fox; Spielberg was later reported to have denied saying that. The accounts conflict, and the available reporting does not establish exactly who made the decision to end Fox’s involvement.
What Megan Fox said about Michael Bay
In a 2009 interview with Wonderland, Fox criticized Bay’s directing style, saying, “He wants to be like Hitler on his sets, and he is. So he’s a nightmare to work for.” GQ later reproduced the remark in an oral history of the film series.
The comparison was Fox’s characterization of her experience, not an independently established description of Bay’s conduct. Her remarks also came amid wider criticism she expressed about misogyny and the sexualization of women in Hollywood, context covered by The Washington Post. That broader context does not, by itself, establish why her casting changed.
What Bay said about Fox’s departure
In GQ’s 2011 oral history, Bay said Fox had been distracted during rehearsals and recalled Spielberg telling him, “Fire her right now.” That is Bay’s account of the conversation; it does not independently confirm Spielberg gave the instruction or settle who initiated Fox’s departure.

Spielberg was later reported to dispute Bay’s account
A 2025 MeriStation report recounted a later Entertainment Weekly interview in which Spielberg denied Bay’s version, saying, “That’s not true. That didn’t happen.” The statement is reported secondhand in the MeriStation article reviewed here, rather than presented here as a direct transcript.
The two accounts therefore remain in conflict: Bay attributed the instruction to Spielberg, while Spielberg was later reported to deny making it. The reporting cited here does not resolve the disagreement or provide a definitive account of the decision-making sequence.
Fox’s role in the third Transformers film
Fox did not appear in Transformers: Dark of the Moon. Rosie Huntington-Whiteley took her place. That casting change is clear; the precise circumstances behind Fox’s exit are not settled by the competing accounts above.

Bay told GQ that he and Fox later exchanged friendly text messages. This establishes that Bay described later contact, but it does not confirm Fox’s view of the exchange or establish the pair’s current relationship status.
