Robert Downey Jr. is returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Doctor Doom—also identified in official material as Victor von Doom—not as Tony Stark or Iron Man. Marvel Studios announced the casting at its July 27, 2024, San Diego Comic-Con presentation. Disney currently lists Avengers: Doomsday for theatrical release on December 18, 2026.
What Marvel revealed at SDCC 2024
At Marvel Studios’ Hall H presentation on July 27, 2024, Downey appeared among people dressed as Doctor Doom and revealed himself as the character. Disney’s event report recorded his remarks: “New mask, same task,” and “What can I tell you? I like playing complicated character.” The latter wording is reproduced as Disney printed it.

Disney’s account of the SDCC announcement describes the reveal and the return of directors Anthony and Joe Russo.
Doctor Doom is a different character from Iron Man
Downey’s new role is Victor von Doom, known as Doctor Doom. Before this casting, he played Tony Stark, also known as Iron Man, in 10 MCU films, according to Disney’s March 2025 announcement. The casting therefore means the same actor is playing a different Marvel character.

Marvel and Disney’s announcements establish the roles but do not explain any in-story connection between Doom and Stark in Avengers: Doomsday. It would be premature to treat Doom as Stark, a Stark variant, or a character whose relationship to Stark is already confirmed.
For more on the film’s official description of Doom’s look, Marvel Japan’s July 20, 2026 promotion describes a silver mask and green cloak. That promotional detail does not by itself establish the character’s story or identity beyond the announced role.

Who is directing, and when is the film due?
Anthony and Joe Russo direct Avengers: Doomsday. Disney’s current US film page lists a theatrical release date of December 18, 2026, and says the film is not yet rated.
The release date has changed: Disney’s March 26, 2025 cast announcement listed May 1, 2026. That earlier date has been superseded by the date on Disney’s current film page. Release schedules can change, so the listing should be checked for the latest date.

How Downey’s casting fits the ensemble
Downey is part of a large cast. Disney’s March 2025 announcement named Chris Hemsworth, Vanessa Kirby, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Letitia Wright, Paul Rudd, Florence Pugh, Pedro Pascal, Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen, among others. Disney’s cast announcement and the related D23 announcement provide the published ensemble details.
The Russos also described their return as a chance to keep exploring the Marvel universe, saying that making earlier films in it fulfilled a lifelong dream and that they were “thrilled to collaborate once again” with Kevin Feige, Louis D’Esposito and the Marvel team. Their statement expresses the directors’ perspective; it does not disclose the film’s plot.
