Yes. Nick Reiner has publicly described struggling with addiction and experiencing periods of homelessness as a teenager. Reports based on his interviews and his family’s comments say he cycled through rehabilitation programs and had gotten clean by 2015. That is a historical account, not evidence of his current recovery status.
What Nick Reiner said about addiction and homelessness
In a 2015 interview with the Los Angeles Times, Nick spoke about quitting heroin: “I got sick of doing that,” he said. He also described the contrast between his upbringing and life on the street: “I come from a nice family. I’m not supposed to be out there on the streets and in homeless shelters doing all these … things.” The newspaper reported that he had cycled in and out of rehabilitation centers and experienced bouts of homelessness as a teenager. The Los Angeles Times’ 2025 account recounts those earlier interviews.
Nick later described being homeless in several states. The Guardian quoted him in 2016: “I was homeless in Maine,” and “I was homeless in New Jersey. I was homeless in Texas. I spent nights on the street. I spent weeks on the street. It was not fun.” These are Nick’s descriptions of his own experience. The Guardian’s report also discusses how that history informed the film he made with his father.
Why he said he was homeless
In comments quoted by People and reproduced by the Los Angeles Times, Nick described a connection between his refusal of programs his parents recommended and his time without housing: “If I wanted to do it my way and not go to the programs they were suggesting, then I had to be homeless.” He also said, “It’s all luck. You roll the dice and you hope you make it.” These remarks are his account of the circumstances; they do not independently establish the explanation for every period of homelessness.

Rob Reiner said he and his wife had relied on counselors’ advice when Nick told them the programs were not working for him. “When Nick would tell us that it wasn’t working for him, we wouldn’t listen. We were desperate, and because the people had diplomas on their wall, we listened to them when we should have been listening to our son,” he told the Los Angeles Times. Michele Singer Reiner recalled, “We were so influenced by these people. They would tell us he’s a liar, that he was trying to manipulate us. And we believed them.” Those comments describe the Reiners’ experience, not general treatment guidance. Further family and addiction-history reporting appears in the Los Angeles Times’ December 2025 report.
How Being Charlie relates to Nick’s life
Being Charlie drew on elements of the family’s experience, but it is a fictional drama, not a documentary or a complete factual account of Nick’s life. The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2015 and was released in 2016. Rob directed it, and Nick co-wrote it with Matt Elisofon. Its story follows a young man dealing with addiction and a difficult relationship with his father.

In an Associated Press interview about making the film, Rob said, “It forced us to understand ourselves better than we had.” Nick said that he and his father had not bonded much while he was growing up and that working together made them feel closer. These are their reflections on the collaboration at that time, not a complete account of their later relationship. The Associated Press’ report describes the film and those comments.
