Rob Reiner’s explanation is that Christian nationalist leaders and supporters saw Donald Trump as a means to political power and desired policy results—not as a model of evangelical piety. He also argues that the movement is driven by a desire to preserve a white Christian national identity amid growing diversity. Those are Reiner’s interpretations, not a description of all Christians or a settled definition of Christian nationalism.
Reiner’s answer: political power mattered more than personal piety
In a February 2024 interview with Rolling Stone, Reiner said he wondered why evangelicals backed Trump rather than Jeb Bush, whom he described as an actual evangelical. Reiner’s answer was that Trump appeared able to deliver political outcomes. The film’s experts, as summarized in the interview, likewise emphasized the appeal of power and results over a candidate’s personal religious credentials.
That distinction helps explain the apparent contradiction between Trump’s public persona and support from some evangelical voters: in this account, backing him did not require seeing him as pious. Pastor Robert Jeffress made a similar point in an Associated Press report published after the 2024 election: “People support President Trump not for his piety but for his policies.”
Reiner’s argument about race, diversity, and national identity
Reiner’s explanation goes beyond policy. He argues that Christian nationalism embraces the idea of America as a white Christian nation and is frightened by the country’s growing diversity. In the Rolling Stone interview, he said: “They’re frightened of what’s happening in this country with diversity. But we are a pluralistic society. E pluribus unum.”

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
This is Reiner’s political interpretation of the movement, not a universal account of evangelical belief or a neutral definition accepted by everyone. The AP’s reporting offers a different emphasis: Jeffress cited immigration and the economy, while other voters cited policy concerns. Those explanations can coexist with Reiner’s account, but they should not be collapsed into one motive or attributed to every Trump voter.
Christian identity is not the same as Christian nationalism
Christians can participate in politics, support candidates, or bring religious values to public debate without endorsing a government that privileges one religious identity. The dispute in Reiner’s film is about the latter possibility: whether a particular version of Christian identity should shape national belonging and political power.

In a January 2024 Washington Post interview about God & Country, the question of how the film’s subject differs from “the traditional teachings of Jesus” was raised as a way to examine that tension. It is a question for discussion, not a single, uncontested theological test. Reiner also warned that Trump’s legal troubles could strengthen his political standing and amplify the idea that he was “anointed by God.” That is Reiner’s forecast and concern, not an established measure of how all supporters understand Trump.
What the 2024 vote shows—and what it does not
AP reported that about eight in ten white evangelical Christian voters supported Trump in 2024, based on AP VoteCast, a survey of more than 120,000 voters. White evangelical Christian voters represented about one-fifth of the electorate. These figures describe reported voting behavior in that election; the cited report does not establish that those voters identified as Christian nationalists or explain each person’s motive.

The AP report also records disagreement and reservations: some voters were uncomfortable with Trump, and scholars and religious leaders differed over the possibility of a Christian nationalist agenda. The numbers show substantial support among a particular voting group in 2024, not unanimity among evangelicals or proof of a single cause.

The documentary presents an argument about the movement’s political focus and its relationship to race, abortion, and Trump through its interviewees. Its framing is useful for understanding Reiner’s answer, but the film and its contributors’ claims should be distinguished from neutral definitions and from the varied reasons individual voters give for their choices.
