Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner died at their Brentwood home in Los Angeles on December 14, 2025. Their son, Nick Reiner, was arrested that night and later charged with two counts of first-degree murder. He has pleaded not guilty, and the case had not gone to trial as of August 9, 2026.
The case first drew widespread attention through a December 15, 2025 PEOPLE report based on family sources. That report said the couple had been killed by their son while also noting that police had not yet confirmed the allegation. Subsequent police, prosecutorial and medical-examiner statements established the deaths as a homicide investigation and identified Nick Reiner as the criminal defendant—not as a person who has been convicted.
What happened to Rob and Michele Reiner?
Los Angeles police responded to a death investigation at the Reiners’ home in the Brentwood neighborhood on December 14, 2025. Officers found filmmaker and actor Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, dead inside the residence.
The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner later reported that both victims died from multiple sharp-force injuries and classified their deaths as homicides. That finding established the medical examiner’s determination about the manner of death; it did not, by itself, determine who was responsible.

Charges filed against Nick Reiner
On December 16, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office formally charged Nick Reiner with two counts of first-degree murder. Prosecutors also alleged a multiple-murder special circumstance, which can affect sentencing if a defendant is later convicted.
Reiner pleaded not guilty on February 23, 2026. He has remained in custody without bail. Because the case is unresolved, the legally accurate description is that he is accused of killing his parents or faces murder charges in their deaths. He has not been convicted, and he remains presumed innocent unless prosecutors prove the charges in court.
