Windows 10 and Windows 11 users can install Netflix through the Microsoft Store. There is no separate official Netflix installer for Windows and no supported command-line installation command listed by Netflix.

One important change affects how you use the app: the current Netflix Windows app supports streaming, live events, higher-quality playback, and ad-supported plans, but it no longer supports downloading films or series for offline viewing.

What you need before installing Netflix

  • A computer running Windows 10 or later, including Windows 11.
  • Access to the Microsoft Store.
  • A Microsoft account, if the Store asks you to sign in.
  • Microsoft Edge installed on the computer. Netflix says the Windows app requires Edge, even if you normally watch in Chrome, Firefox, or another browser.
  • A Netflix account and subscription that supports the content and features you want to use.

If Microsoft Edge is missing, install it from the Microsoft Store before trying to install Netflix. Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8.1 are not supported by the current Netflix app installation path.

How to download and install the Netflix app

  1. Open the Start menu.
  2. Select Store to open the Microsoft Store.
  3. Select Search.
  4. Type Netflix and press Enter.
  5. Select the official Netflix app in the search results.
  6. Select Install.
  7. If Microsoft requests it, sign in with your Microsoft account credentials.
  8. When installation finishes, open the Start menu.
  9. Select the Netflix app.
  10. Select Sign In, enter the email address and password for your Netflix account, and select Sign In again.

You can also find the installed app by typing Netflix into the Start-menu search. Pin it to Start or the taskbar if you want faster access.

Netflix is missing from the Microsoft Store

Netflix directs users to Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance when the app cannot be found or installed in the Store. The Netflix Help Center does not identify one Netflix-specific cause or provide a separate installation command for this problem.

Start with these checks:

  1. Confirm that Windows is running version 10 or later.
  2. Make sure Microsoft Edge is installed.
  3. Open the Microsoft Store directly rather than using a third-party download site.
  4. Sign in to the Microsoft Store if prompted.
  5. Restart Windows and search for Netflix again.
  6. Use Microsoft’s troubleshooting steps for Microsoft Store apps if the listing still does not appear or the installation fails.

Avoid downloading an alleged Netflix EXE installer from an unofficial website. Netflix’s current Windows download route is the Microsoft Store.

Fix the “new version is required” message

If Netflix displays “A new version of the Netflix app is available and required to continue,” update it through the Store:

Can you download Netflix films for offline viewing on Windows?

No. The current Netflix app for Windows 10 and 11 does not support offline downloads. If you see the message “Download Error — There was a problem with this download. (VC2-CV1-ER)”, the problem is not normally a failed download that can be repaired: Netflix has removed downloads from the Windows app.

Previously downloaded titles may also disappear after the app changes. Netflix says there is no way to return to the old Windows app version. Uninstalling, resetting, or clearing app data can delete downloads stored on a device, although the current Windows app does not support creating new downloads.

For offline viewing, use a supported mobile device, Amazon Fire tablet, or compatible Chromebook instead. The Windows app remains useful for online streaming, but it is not a replacement for the older download-capable version.

Use Netflix in a browser instead

You do not have to install the Windows app. Open netflix.com in a supported browser and sign in.

Browser on Windows Minimum version listed by Netflix Maximum listed resolution
Microsoft Edge 118 or later Up to Ultra HD (2160p), when requirements are met
Google Chrome 117 or later Up to Ultra HD (2160p), when requirements are met
Mozilla Firefox 111 or later Up to Full HD (1080p)
Opera 92 or later Up to Full HD (1080p)

The browser option is practical if the Store is unavailable, you do not want another installed app, or you prefer to keep Netflix in the same browser as your other documentary research. Browser playback still requires a compatible Netflix plan, current software, and suitable hardware for higher resolutions.

Requirements for 4K Netflix on Windows

Installing the app alone does not guarantee Ultra HD playback. Netflix’s Windows requirements include:

The current Netflix Windows app no longer supports downloads for offline viewing. The VC2-CV1-ER download error reflects this change, not a missing setting that can restore downloads.

Can I watch Netflix without installing the Windows app?

Yes. Go to netflix.com in a supported browser. Netflix lists Edge 118 or later, Chrome 117 or later, Firefox 111 or later, and Opera 92 or later for Windows.

The Bottom Line

Install Netflix on Windows 10 or 11 through Start → Microsoft Store → Search → Netflix → Install, then sign in with your Netflix account. Keep Microsoft Edge installed, and do not expect the current app to provide offline downloads: that feature was removed. If you only need streaming, the Netflix website in a current browser is an equally valid alternative.
