Ripley is a beautifully controlled, quietly unsettling adaptation that makes watching Tom Ripley think his way through a lie feel almost as tense as watching him commit a crime. Andrew Scott’s restrained performance and the series’ striking black-and-white images give it a distinctive pull. The trade-off is its pace: across eight episodes, patient observation can become a test of patience.
What is Netflix’s Ripley about?
Set in the early 1960s, the limited series follows Tom Ripley, a New York grifter hired by a wealthy man to travel to Italy and persuade his son, Dickie Greenleaf, to return home. Tom accepts—and finds himself building a life of deceit, fraud and murder. Netflix’s official description names Andrew Scott as Tom, Dakota Fanning as Marge Sherwood and Johnny Flynn as Dickie Greenleaf. Steven Zaillian wrote and directed all eight episodes.

Why does the slow-burn approach work?
Scott makes the audience watch Ripley calculate
Scott plays Tom as watchful and controlled, but not as an infallible mastermind. He makes mistakes, reads situations imperfectly and has to improvise. That vulnerability shifts the suspense away from simply asking who will become Tom’s next victim. Instead, the viewer follows the practical questions: What has he overlooked? How can he get out of this? What will he try next?

Scott described the aim as drawing viewers toward Tom’s experience rather than making them feel like “a victim of Tom Ripley,” in comments to the Associated Press. Zaillian similarly said, “He often doesn’t know what he should do next, and neither do we. And so we become part of the process in that way.” The extended format gives the show room to linger on the work of maintaining a deception—its logistics, pauses and sudden complications. That process can be absorbing precisely because it is not presented as effortless.
Black-and-white images turn observation into atmosphere
The monochrome photography and carefully arranged compositions make the world feel both elegant and severe. Rooms, streets and objects seem to invite scrutiny; the look is not just period decoration, but part of how the series asks us to study Tom and the identities he tries on.

Caravaggio is a key motif, but it comes from Zaillian’s interpretation, not from Highsmith’s novel. The AP reports that Zaillian connected the painter and Ripley as rascals whose lives involved killing. TIME critic Judy Berman reads the reference as a way of recasting the novel’s aesthetic preoccupations; Highsmith does not mention Caravaggio. In the series, art becomes a lens for thinking about violence, appearance and self-invention rather than a detail inherited from the book.
Where might the series lose viewers?
The same patience that makes Ripley’s schemes legible can also make the drama feel inert. The show takes time over movement, planning and aftermath, and its tension often accumulates by inches rather than through a rapid chain of twists. If you want a thriller that keeps accelerating, the measured rhythm may feel sluggish.

That divide is visible in the contemporary reviews. The Associated Press emphasizes how the longer format lets viewers watch Ripley solve problems in real time. TIME’s Judy Berman praises the visual accomplishment and Scott’s dynamic yet restrained performance, while calling the eight-part drama “torpid” and “ultimately a bit vapid.” The disagreement gets at the series’ central gamble: its close attention can create complicity and suspense, but it does not always produce momentum.
How does it compare with Highsmith’s novel and earlier films?
Ripley adapts Patricia Highsmith’s Tom Ripley fiction, beginning with The Talented Mr. Ripley, the first and best-known of her five Ripley novels, according to the Television Academy. If the series leaves you curious about its source, that novel is the natural place to start.

TIME’s Berman argues that the eight-hour version has more room to follow the novel’s tortuous plot than René Clément’s 1960 film Purple Noon or Anthony Minghella’s 1999 The Talented Mr. Ripley. The comparison is useful as a question of format and emphasis, not a verdict that one adaptation is definitive. Zaillian’s series favors close observation, an extended view of Ripley’s problem-solving and its own visual motifs. The novel and earlier films offer different ways into the same material.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Ripley worth watching?
Yes, if you value performance, visual design and psychological tension more than speed. Scott gives Tom a controlled surface with enough uncertainty beneath it to keep his next move in doubt, while the monochrome style and Caravaggio motif make the series feel deliberately composed. But this is not a brisk crime thriller: its eight episodes ask you to settle into the mechanics of deception. That patience pays off for viewers who enjoy watching a scheme take shape; for others, it may be the obstacle.
