Starr has said he welcomed Beyoncé’s turn toward country, and recalled meeting Johnny Cash at the Beatles’ final concert in San Francisco.
How T Bone Burnett helped turn an EP into Look Up
Starr told Rolling Stone en Español that he met producer T Bone Burnett at a literary event hosted by Olivia Harrison. Starr was working on a series of EPs and asked Burnett to send him a song. Burnett sent a country song and encouraged him to make a full album instead. That exchange became the starting point for Look Up.

The album has 11 songs. Starr co-wrote its closing track, “Thankful,” and played drums throughout, according to the interview. Urban.ro’s January 2025 report says Burnett contributed nine original songs.
Did Beyoncé inspire Ringo Starr’s country album?
No. Starr said Beyoncé’s move into country did not inspire Look Up. He was aware of her work and praised the decision: “We were all aware of Beyoncé. I think it’s great that she went there,” he told Rolling Stone. The album’s origin, as Starr described it, was his exchange with Burnett—not the wider attention surrounding Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter.

Starr’s country interest began long before Look Up
Starr traced his interest in country music to childhood exposure to Gene Autry and later listening to the genre. The Rolling Stone interview also discusses pedal steel player Pete Drake and other country influences. So while Look Up arrived amid fresh pop-culture attention to country, Starr described it as part of a longer-running musical interest.
