Richard Evonitz died by suicide on June 26, 2002, two days after 15-year-old Kara Robinson escaped from his South Carolina apartment and identified him. FBI accounts later linked him through forensic evidence to three Virginia murders. Investigation Discovery’s three-part docuseries The Serial Killer Connection, listed for an October 7 premiere, revisits the case and investigates whether other crimes may be connected—an open question, not a confirmed finding.

What happened after Kara Robinson escaped?

On June 24, 2002, Evonitz abducted Robinson, then 15, in Columbia, South Carolina. The FBI’s ViCAP alert says he held her in his apartment for approximately 18 hours before she escaped. The alert describes the survivor without naming her; the official series page and Oxygen identify her as Kara Robinson Chamberlain.

After Robinson identified him, Evonitz fled to Sarasota, Florida. The FBI says law enforcement surrounded him there and that he died by suicide on June 26, 2002. Oxygen reports that Robinson learned of his death two days after escaping. Because Evonitz died, a trial and conviction for the abduction and linked crimes were not possible; describing the crimes as forensic links is not the same as describing a court finding.

Which Virginia murders did FBI evidence link to Evonitz?

FBI accounts connect Evonitz to the 1996 murder of Sofia Silva and the 1997 murders of sisters Kristin and Kati Lisk in Virginia. Investigators compared evidence from his South Carolina residence, his former residence in Spotsylvania, and his car after Robinson identified him. The FBI describes hair and fiber comparisons linking him to all three murders.

Among the evidence were fibers from fur-lined handcuffs. The FBI says those fibers were connected to the three homicide victims and to Robinson, the survivor. In a 2013 retrospective, the FBI said trace evidence definitively linked Evonitz to the three Virginia murders. The same retrospective says he is suspected of other homicides and attacks; suspicion is not confirmation that those additional crimes occurred.

What is The Serial Killer Connection about?

The Serial Killer Connection is a three-part Investigation Discovery docuseries featuring Kara Robinson Chamberlain and Bonnie Lou. According to the official series page, they retrace Evonitz’s past, speak with survivors, victims’ families, law enforcement and people who knew him, and investigate whether additional crimes may be connected to him. Evonitz’s sister also appears in an interview that the page describes as her first public comments about him. Talos Films is named as the producer.

Robinson’s stated reason for pursuing the question is personal: “I have always believed Marc did more.” The series page also quotes her asking, “what else could Marc have done?” Those are Robinson’s beliefs and questions, not evidence that further crimes have been established. The confirmed FBI-linked cases and the docuseries’ inquiry into possible additional victims should be kept distinct.
