Review: Is Alex Gibney’s *Musk* Worth Its Nearly Four Hours?

Alex Gibney’s nearly four-hour portrait of Elon Musk spans his personal history, companies and political influence. Its breadth divides critics on whether the running time pays off.

Alex Gibney’s Musk makes its case through accumulation: a sweeping portrait of Elon Musk that connects his personal history and business career to his growing political influence. Critics disagree about whether that breadth earns the film’s nearly four-hour running time. It may for viewers who want an expansive, current argument; its uneven structure and familiar early material may test those who already know the story.

How long is Alex Gibney’s Musk documentary?

Time Out lists the film at 235 minutes, including a 10-minute intermission; the Associated Press describes it as nearly four hours without giving a minute count. The intermission matters: the listed total includes a break, rather than representing uninterrupted screen time. Published runtime descriptions therefore vary slightly in how they frame the length.

What is in the documentary?

Musk moves from Musk’s childhood and early Silicon Valley years through his companies, his takeover of X, and his work with DOGE and international right-wing politics. The range gives the film room to frame Musk not only as an entrepreneur but as a figure whose influence extends into public institutions and political life.

Gibney initially hoped Musk would agree to an interview, but Musk declined. The film instead combines archival footage with interviews that include Musk’s father, Errol Musk; Tesla co-founder Martin Eberhard; Justine Musk; Sam Harris; journalist Kara Swisher; and former USAID Administrator Samantha Power. Its account of subjects such as X’s algorithms includes interpretations and claims made by the filmmaker and interviewees; those should be understood as part of the film’s argument, not automatically as independently established findings.

An avatar stands in for a direct interview

One of the film’s more conspicuous devices is a CGI Musk avatar, with AI voice syncing, used to stage an interview-like exchange from Musk’s previously recorded statements. Gibney said the device was meant to convey the “reality of what he’s done and unreality of his narrative.” It is a formal choice, not a substitute for a new interview: the documentary does not include Musk sitting down with Gibney.

Is Musk worth watching?

The strongest case for watching is the film’s breadth and cumulative argument. Its chronology, varied interview perspectives, archival material, and attention to Musk’s contemporary political role let Gibney connect episodes that can otherwise feel like separate stories. For viewers looking for a long-form portrait rather than a brief update, the scale is part of the point.

That same scale is the film’s risk. Time Out awards it four out of five stars, praising its breadth and insight and saying it “flies by.” The Washington Post reviewer likewise reported that a morning screening felt shorter than it was. O’Dell, by contrast, finds the first half structurally weak and too dependent on familiar material, while judging the treatment of relationships and later politics more compelling. TheWrap also sees the film’s strongest momentum arriving late, with its DOGE-era material.

Those responses suggest a practical dividing line: viewers interested in how Musk’s business, personal, and political histories fit together may find the accumulated case rewarding, while viewers who already follow him closely may find the opening familiar and the structure slow to build. The film’s late acceleration may be a payoff for some and evidence of a long wait for others.

Where can you watch Musk?

A September 17 New York Times report said the US theatrical release was scheduled to begin October 9 in New York and Los Angeles, followed by a national run beginning October 16. Those dates describe the reported rollout, not necessarily current local availability. The report said Universal had not announced overseas dates at that time. No streaming date or service was established, so the film should not be described as available on a particular streaming platform.
