In Rolling Stone Australia/New Zealand, critic Mosi Reeves praises the album’s hard-won optimism while acknowledging that some choices are awkward or less convincing.
Why Reeves calls Star Line a return to form
Reeves frames Star Line as Chance’s first album in six years, arriving after the poorly received The Big Day (2019). The contrast matters to the review: rather than relying on the buoyant, gospel-influenced persona associated with Coloring Book, Chance sounds like an artist reckoning with loss, divorce and changed expectations from listeners.
The review’s central claim is not simply that Chance is cheerful again. Reeves hears optimism that has survived difficulty and therefore feels earned. As he puts it, “Chance hasn’t lost his innate optimism, and it’s that quality that ultimately makes Star Line a worthy and even remarkable return to form.” That is Reeves’s critical judgment, not a claim of universal agreement.
What the album is trying to hold together
The title invokes Marcus Garvey’s Black Star Line project, which the review associates with Black Americans’ migration to Liberia. Reeves reads the reference as an invitation to keep imagining a better future during political and personal crises. Across the album, that idea connects communal responsibility with Chance’s own changing life.

Black politics and the responsibilities of community are central, but the record also moves through Chicago identity, loneliness, marriage and its end, fatherhood, lessons from Chance’s father, and faith. The breadth could have made the album feel scattered. Reeves instead finds the 17-track sequence cohesive and memorable, with its subjects contributing to a larger picture of Black life and personal change.
Political songs and difficult questions
Church, land and shared responsibility
On “Letters,” Chance calls on Black churches to move away from prosperity-gospel habits and recover the activist energy of the Civil Rights era. “Just a Drop,” featuring Jay Electronica, considers Black people’s relationship to land and water and evokes the Flint Water Crisis. Reeves finds the latter track complex and ultimately satisfying, while noting complications around the guest verse.

“The Negro Problem” takes up shared responsibility and closes with audio from a Richard Pryor skit. “Drapetomania,” meanwhile, pairs Chance with teenage drill artist BigChiefDoIt. Together, these songs show the album’s political range; they do not make every lyrical or guest choice beyond criticism.
Generosity does not remove the friction
Reeves sees Chance’s attempt to make room for many voices as one of the album’s strengths and one of its risks. He calls “Tree” corny but fun, while criticizing Lil Wayne’s use of an offensive slur. He also questions whether “Gun in Yo Purse” fits the album and finds some boasts less believable. His assessment is that Chance is not a hardcore rapper, a distinction that helps explain why certain postures do not land as convincingly as the record’s reflective material.

Standout tracks and weaker moments
Reeves singles out “The Highs and the Lows,” featuring Joey Bada$$, for its chipmunk-soul beat and impact. By contrast, he describes “Space & Time” as a bland arena-pop ballad. Those contrasting responses underline the review’s broader point: the album’s ambition and sequencing create a strong whole, even though individual moments vary in persuasiveness.

Listeners drawn to Chance’s earlier optimism may find its return here more compelling because it sits beside grief, changing relationships and political concern rather than simply repeating an earlier mood. The review also describes him confronting fans’ expectation that he return to past drug use, and discusses his grief for Mac Miller as part of the album’s emotional context. These are Reeves’s readings of the lyrics and record, not a comprehensive account of Chance’s biography.
