Directed, produced and written by Alison Reid, it draws on Foster’s archival footage and Bateman’s art to revisit the journey—and follows a later effort to find the Land Rover they called the Grizzly Torque. Its appeal lies in the way those strands connect adventure with the men’s subsequent reflections on nature and the lives they made after the trip.
What the documentary is about
Bateman and Foster set out in 1957 in a Land Rover named the Grizzly Torque. The film looks back on their expedition through footage Foster recorded at the time, Bateman’s artwork, and conversations with the two men decades later. Rotten Tomatoes lists the film at 1 hour 26 minutes; POV Magazine describes its use of the surviving archive.
The expedition supplies the forward motion, but the documentary is not only a travelogue. Bateman and Foster reflect on what they saw and how the experience relates to their later lives. A present-day search for the Grizzly Torque gives the story a route back from memory to the physical object at its center.

Reflection connects the trip to later lives
The interviews with Bateman and Foster bring the expedition into conversation with what followed. Adventure, nature and perspective
Published coverage frames the film around adventure, friendship, art, science and environmental concern. That range gives the trip more weight than a sequence of destinations: Bateman’s work and Foster’s scientific background make the act of observing the natural world part of the story. The film’s retrospective structure also invites viewers to consider how an early journey can shape what people notice and value over time.
Bateman described the trip as daunting despite its dreamlike quality, recalling in POV Magazine that they entered unfamiliar countries knowing no one and trying to survive. How far did the expedition go?
In a 2026 review, This Week in New York describes the trip as eighteen months, across nineteen countries and four continents, covering more than fifty thousand miles. Those are that publication’s figures; other coverage varies in its descriptions of the expedition’s duration and distance, so they should not be treated as a universally established count.
Who is likely to enjoy it?
- Documentary viewers interested in archival storytelling: Foster’s surviving footage and Bateman’s art are central to how the journey is retold.
- Viewers drawn to travel and exploration: the expedition offers a historical road story, with the Land Rover search connecting it to the present.
- People interested in nature, art and science: the film links the men’s observations during the trip with their later reflections.
If you want a tightly paced, present-tense adventure film, the retrospective interviews and return-to-the-past structure may be less compelling than the expedition material itself. The strongest fit is for viewers who enjoy seeing how archives, memory and later perspective reshape an old journey.
