The dispute centered on the film’s allegations about Israeli military and intelligence operations in Gaza, its use of anonymous sources, and whether HIFF’s description and related programming gave audiences enough context. Police said the protest and screening ended without incident, the report said.
Why did the HIFF screening of NAZA draw protests?
Members of East End Jews for Israel, Inc. demonstrated outside the Sag Harbor Cinema as festivalgoers arrived for the Oct. 3 screening. Spark Hamptons reported an estimate of roughly 50 demonstrators, who used signs, a megaphone and chants. Sag Harbor Village Police managed traffic and increased their presence. The report said the protest remained peaceful and police said it concluded, along with the screening, without incident.

The protest was part of a wider local dispute over how the film presents contested claims about Israel’s military conduct, whether its sourcing was sufficiently transparent, and how a festival should frame a politically sensitive documentary.
What is NAZA about?
NAZA is an 80-minute UK documentary released in 2026, directed by Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor. HIFF’s film guide describes it as examining allegations about the strategy behind Israeli intelligence operations during the three years following the Oct. 7, 2023 attacks. The guide says the film was made in partnership with The Guardian and executive produced by Jonathan Glazer.

Spark Hamptons reported that the documentary features interviews with 24 Israeli military and intelligence personnel whose identities are concealed. The filmmakers said the film grew out of more than three years of investigative reporting and interviews with more than 100 sources; those are their claims about the reporting process, not independent verification of the film’s conclusions. According to Spark Hamptons, the title refers to the Hebrew military acronym nezek agavi, translated in its report as “collateral damage” and described as a way of estimating expected civilian deaths in an airstrike.
What did critics object to?
Before the screening, the Jewish Center of the Hamptons urged HIFF to reconsider or cancel it. The East Hampton Star reported that the center objected to the film’s anonymous sourcing and framing, and argued that labeling it a documentary could lead viewers to treat contested claims as established fact.

Temple Adas Israel also criticized HIFF’s original film description, saying it presented allegations as fact. At the same time, the congregation supported the festival’s right to show the film and opposed censorship, according to Spark Hamptons.
Spark Hamptons reported that Israel’s military rejected the film’s portrayal of targeting procedures and disputed its allegations about civilian casualties; the filmmakers defended their reporting. These are opposing positions in the dispute, not findings independently established by the screening or by the public discussion around it.

How did HIFF respond?
HIFF proceeded with the screening and revised its description to make clear that the film explores allegations and that its depiction has drawn controversy and criticism, according to Spark Hamptons. The festival also arranged a two-hour panel featuring journalists, a documentary filmmaker, a military expert and other participants, and added screenings of The Choice and Holding Liat.
Those measures were HIFF’s approach to providing context; they do not establish that every viewpoint was represented or resolve the factual disagreements about the film. Board Co-Chairman Randy Mastro defended the principle of showing contested work, telling Spark Hamptons: “The answer to speech considered offensive is not censorship; it is more speech.”

The disagreement is about more than whether a festival may show a controversial film. It also concerns how it should describe allegations, what audiences can learn about a documentary’s sourcing, and whether additional programming supplies meaningful context.
Rabbi Debra Stein of the Jewish Center of the Hamptons told Spark Hamptons: “We’re not asking for censorship,” Stein said. “We’re asking for balanced exposure. No censorship. Nobody wants censorship.” Judy Licht, secretary of HIFF’s Board Executive Committee, offered a related view: “I think all points of an issue should be screened, but within context,” Licht said.

Those statements capture competing priorities: protecting the space to screen and debate a work, while giving audiences enough information to distinguish a film’s allegations from verified fact and to hear relevant criticism. Whether HIFF’s panel and revised description met that standard is a matter of judgment; neither the event nor the panel by itself settles the underlying claims.
Was another screening scheduled?
HIFF’s film guide listed an additional screening for Oct. 9 at East Hampton Regal UA. Because festival schedules and ticket access can change, check the HIFF film guide for current details.
