Restream YouTube Stream Black Screen with Pre-Recorded Video: How to Fix It

Check the source-file encoding first, then verify YouTube stream settings and test privately. Restream’s documentation offers troubleshooting steps but does not confirm a single cause for this black-screen symptom.

If your Restream broadcast reaches YouTube but shows a black picture, first check the pre-recorded source file: Restream requires an MP4, MOV, M4V, or MKV file with H.264 video, AAC audio, and a keyframe setting of 2. Then check the outgoing YouTube stream settings and test privately or unlisted. Restream’s guidance covers these checks, but does not identify one confirmed cause for this exact black-screen symptom.

1. Check the pre-recorded video file

Start with the file you uploaded or selected in Restream. Its published requirements are separate from the settings used for the outgoing YouTube live stream.

  • Container: MP4, MOV, M4V, or MKV.
  • Video encoding: H.264.
  • Audio codec: AAC.
  • Keyframe setting: 2.

These are Restream’s listed requirements for pre-recorded videos, not a guarantee that a compliant file will resolve every black screen. If your file uses another format or encoding, create a test encode that meets the requirements and try that file. Restream describes its conversion tool as a way to convert an unsupported format to MP4; conversion by itself is not established as a universal fix. See Restream’s pre-recorded video requirements.

Optional file recommendations

Restream recommends 1080p (1920×1080), 30 or 60 FPS, and CBR where supported. These are recommendations, not mandatory upload conditions. It also recommends adding 15–20 seconds at both the beginning and end of a video to give platforms time to process the incoming stream without cutting into important content. These recommendations are documented in Restream Help Center articles published in 2026; they are not a black-screen diagnosis.

  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

2. Check the outgoing YouTube stream settings

The source-file requirements above concern the video being sent into Restream. Separately, Restream’s YouTube guide lists H.264, 240p–2160p, up to 60 FPS, CBR, and a recommended 2-second keyframe interval, with a 4-second maximum. Bitrate depends on resolution and frame rate, so there is no single bitrate to apply regardless of your output settings.

Compare the outgoing feed with the settings in Restream’s YouTube streaming guide. Keep the distinction clear: the guide’s YouTube recommendations do not replace the pre-recorded file requirements.

3. Test with a private or unlisted YouTube broadcast

Use a private or unlisted stream to inspect whether the broadcast connects to YouTube and whether the picture appears there. This helps compare what Restream is sending with what the destination displays; it does not by itself identify which component caused a black picture.

  1. Set up a private or unlisted YouTube test event appropriate for your workflow.
  2. Start the Restream broadcast and inspect the event on YouTube while it is live.
  3. Note whether the picture is black, whether audio is present, and whether the event starts successfully.
  4. If practical, compare with the same source in a direct YouTube stream, as described below.

Restream explains how to test a stream before going live in its stream testing guide.

4. If YouTube is not receiving or displaying the broadcast

If the issue is that the stream will not start or appear at all, rather than a live event with a black picture, check the channel connection and event setup. Restream’s YouTube start troubleshooting includes checking settings, reconnecting the channel, removing and re-adding it, and resetting the stream key if needed. You can also try going live directly on YouTube without Restream to compare behavior. Restream’s suggestion is a comparison step, not proof that a channel connection or key caused a black screen.

Follow Restream’s YouTube start troubleshooting for the connection and stream-key steps. Make sure the test event type is compatible: Restream says events created through YouTube’s mobile app are for mobile streaming only and are not supported for streaming through Restream.

5. Narrow down what differs between tests

Use your test results to describe the failure accurately rather than assuming a cause. Compare these observations:

  • Does the selected source file play visibly before broadcast?
  • Does a file encoded to Restream’s listed requirements behave differently?
  • Does the private or unlisted Restream test show the same black picture on YouTube?
  • Does a direct YouTube stream using the source behave differently?
  • Is audio present even when the video is black?
  • Was the YouTube event created in the mobile app?

These comparisons follow the checks Restream documents; they are a practical troubleshooting sequence, not a formally validated test that proves which system is at fault.

6. If the black screen remains

When contacting support, provide a concise reproduction that makes the setup clear:

  • Source-file container, video codec, audio codec, and keyframe setting.
  • The workflow used to send the pre-recorded video through Restream.
  • YouTube event type and whether the channel connection or stream key was changed.
  • Whether audio is audible during the black picture.
  • What happened in the private or unlisted test and in a direct YouTube comparison.

The cited Restream guidance recommends support for complex cases, but does not publish a black-screen-specific diagnostic checklist or a statistic for how often this exact issue occurs.
