Short answer: Streamlabs is the more direct choice when you need desktop production tools to send a live broadcast to YouTube. Restream is a cloud relay for an encoder feed and may fit better when you need multiple destinations or cloud-hosted prerecorded video. For an always-on YouTube channel, first decide whether you mean a live camera or data feed, a locally produced loop, or prerecorded videos that should keep playing when your computer is off.
How the two services fit into an always-on setup
Streamlabs and Restream do different jobs, and they can also be used together. Streamlabs offers tools for producing and encoding a broadcast. Restream can receive a software-encoder feed and route it to connected channels; it also advertises prerecorded-video streaming. Neither should be treated as a universal 24/7 solution without checking where the video is produced, what happens if the connection fails, and what the selected plan includes.
| Question | Streamlabs-centered workflow | Restream-centered or combined workflow |
|---|---|---|
| What is its role? | Production and encoder software or creator workflows. Streamlabs lists Desktop, OBS plugin, Mobile, Console, and Talk Studio for YouTube. | A cloud service that can receive an encoder feed and send it to connected destinations; prerecorded streaming is also advertised. |
| Where does the work run? | A desktop workflow depends on a local app and computer. Other Streamlabs offerings have their own device and workflow requirements. | An encoder workflow sends a feed to Restream. Prerecorded streaming is advertised as a cloud capability; check the current plan limits. |
| One YouTube destination | Can stream directly to YouTube. | Can route a feed to YouTube, adding another service between the encoder and YouTube. |
| Multiple destinations | Streamlabs describes multistreaming among premium features or workflows; availability depends on the chosen product and plan. | Active destination count depends on plan. Restream’s February 9, 2026 help article lists Free: 2, Standard: 3, Professional: 5, Business: 8, Enterprise: 25+; these limits and feature access can change. |
| Prerecorded loop | The Streamlabs product information cited here does not establish an always-on prerecorded-loop feature. | Restream promotes prerecorded streaming for 24/7 TV, music, and news channels; its help article places the feature among higher-plan offerings. |
| Recovery and uptime | No uptime SLA or guaranteed recovery is established in the cited materials. | Restream cautions that maintenance may restart a stream running continuously for over 24 hours. No guaranteed recovery SLA is established. |
Check current product availability, operating-system support, destination limits, and plan features before choosing: Streamlabs’ offerings and Restream’s plan details can change. The comparison above describes the documented roles, not a hands-on reliability test.
Choose based on what “always-on” means
A live camera, scene, or data feed
If the stream must show a changing live source, you need a source and encoder that stay active. Streamlabs can provide a local production workflow that sends directly to YouTube. Restream can sit between an encoder and YouTube, which is useful when routing to several destinations is part of the plan. In either case, a local encoder depends on the computer, power, and internet connection it uses; the available sources do not establish guaranteed failover or uninterrupted service for either vendor.

A prerecorded video loop
Restream explicitly promotes prerecorded-video streaming for around-the-clock channels, with the feature subject to plan limits. The Streamlabs product information cited here does not substantiate an equivalent always-on prerecorded-loop function. If the goal is to play uploaded videos while your computer is off, compare cloud-hosted prerecorded playback rather than assuming a desktop production app will keep running unattended.
A locally produced loop that must survive unattended
A local setup can produce a continuous feed, but the computer and connection remain part of the chain. Restream can relay that feed, but it does not remove the local source dependency. Plan for power or network interruptions and know how you will restart the encoder and reconnect YouTube if the feed stops.

Set up an encoder feed for YouTube
YouTube supports both software encoders running on a computer and standalone hardware encoders. Dedicated hardware is optional, not a requirement for an always-on stream. If this is the channel’s first live broadcast, enabling live streaming may take up to 24 hours to activate, so do that before the planned start. See YouTube’s encoder help.
- Enable YouTube Live. In YouTube Studio, enable live streaming for the channel. Restream’s setup guide says first-time activation involves phone verification and a 24-hour wait; YouTube likewise notes that activation can take up to 24 hours.
- Choose the path. For direct streaming, connect the encoder to YouTube. For a Restream workflow, connect the encoder to Restream and connect YouTube as a destination. A Streamlabs desktop workflow can send directly to YouTube; multistream features depend on the selected Streamlabs product and plan.
- Enter the stream key in the encoder. Treat the key as a credential: do not publish or share it. Restream’s encoder guide says its RTMP key remains static unless reset; if you replace a stream card, you may need to update the key in the encoder.
- Set encoder output. Restream’s YouTube setup article recommends H.264 video, constant bitrate (CBR), keyframes every 2 seconds (4 seconds maximum), and up to 60 FPS, with audio settings also covered in its guide. These are Restream recommendations, not a guarantee that every resolution, encoder, or connection will work identically.
- Check upload capacity and stability. Restream’s general encoder guide recommends at least 10 Mbps upload and 25 Mbps or higher for Full HD. These are Restream’s guidance figures, not a universal guarantee; leave headroom for other network use and monitor the actual encoder connection.
- Start and verify the broadcast. Confirm that YouTube receives the feed and that audio and video are present before leaving a stream unattended. For a continuous channel, decide how you will respond if the encoder, network, or relay stops.

Plan for YouTube archives and long sessions
Stream duration and archive retention are separate issues. Restream’s YouTube guide says YouTube has no stream-duration limit, but archives only streams under 12 hours. That is an archive condition, not a maximum live-broadcast length. A channel running continuously should plan how it will handle recordings instead of assuming one complete 24/7 replay will be retained.
Restream also warns that its server may be restarted for maintenance when a stream runs continuously for over 24 hours. This is a stated possibility, not a claim that every long stream will stop. Neither service’s cited materials establish an uptime guarantee for this comparison.

Common problems and practical fixes
- Live streaming is not available yet: If the channel has never streamed, complete YouTube’s activation and phone-verification steps early; first-time activation may take up to 24 hours.
- YouTube does not receive the encoder feed: Check that the encoder is sending to the intended destination and that the stream key matches. If you replaced a Restream stream card, update the key in the encoder if required.
- The feed drops or becomes unstable: Check the upload connection and competing network use. Restream recommends at least 10 Mbps upload and 25 Mbps or higher for Full HD, but those figures are guidance rather than a guarantee of stable operation.
- A continuous Restream session is interrupted: Restream says maintenance may restart its server for streams running over 24 hours. Be prepared to reconnect or restart the feed; the cited material does not promise automatic recovery.
- A long broadcast has no complete YouTube archive: Restream’s guide says YouTube archives only streams under 12 hours. Treat live continuity and archive availability as separate requirements.
- A needed feature is missing from the plan: Verify current destination counts and whether prerecorded streaming is included before paying. Restream identifies both plan-dependent channel counts and higher-plan access for prerecorded video; Streamlabs describes some multistreaming features as premium.

Copyright and channel eligibility still matter
A tool that keeps a feed running does not grant rights to the video or music in it. Before using recordings in a continuous channel, confirm you have the necessary rights and check YouTube’s rules for copyright, live streaming, and monetization. Reused-content and copyright questions are separate from whether an encoder or cloud service can play the video. StreamNeo’s copyright safety checklist can help you review a planned stream; it does not replace rights clearance or YouTube policy review.
Which should you choose?
Choose Streamlabs when you need a creator-facing production workflow and YouTube is your main destination. Consider Restream when its cloud routing, multistreaming, or plan-supported prerecorded streaming addresses a specific need. For uploaded prerecorded videos that should continue with your home computer off, StreamNeo is the cloud alternative to consider first: it runs the loop from the cloud, supports uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, and includes automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
