Robert Redford and German-born painter and environmental artist Sibylle Szaggars married in Hamburg in 2009, after years together. They remained married until Redford’s death in September 2025. Their public story includes Redford’s brief, affectionate comments about Szaggars and her independent work, including the climate-focused performance-art project The Way of the Rain.
When Robert Redford and Sibylle Szaggars met and married
AARP reported in a 2011 interview that Redford met Szaggars at Sundance in the late 1990s. That account establishes when they met, but not a precise start date for their relationship. The couple married in Hamburg in 2009. A contemporaneous Associated Press report, citing a St. Catherine Church official, said Pastor Frank Engelbrecht officiated.
What Redford said about Szaggars
In the 2011 AARP interview, Redford spoke warmly but briefly about his wife: “She’s a very special person.” He also said, “She’s younger than I am, and European, which I like, so that’s a whole new life.” Those are Redford’s own public remarks; they offer a glimpse of how he described Szaggars, not a fuller account of their private life.
Sibylle Szaggars’s art and environmental work
Szaggars is a German-born painter and environmental artist with a public creative identity of her own. EL PAÍS reported in a 2025 retrospective that she founded The Way of the Rain in 2015, describing it as a performance-art project exploring climate change and bringing artists together around the issue. That account frames the project’s purpose; it does not establish a quantified environmental impact.

Redford’s environmental advocacy
Redford also had a separate, long-standing environmental advocacy record. The Associated Press reported that he advocated for clean-air and clean-water legislation, worked to conserve land in Utah, and served on the board of the Natural Resources Defense Council. AP also connected his concern about pollution to his experience of Los Angeles changing into a city of smog and freeways. Their shared concern with environmental issues is part of the public context, but their work and roles should not be conflated.
Their marriage after Redford’s death
Redford died in September 2025 at age 89. Obituary coverage reported that he was married to Szaggars at the time of his death. Their marriage is therefore best described in the past tense, while keeping its public record distinct from assumptions about their private relationship.
