Resso is no longer available in India. ByteDance shut down the Indian service on January 31, 2024, after the app was removed from the Indian Google Play Store and Apple App Store. It cannot be recommended as a working music-streaming app in 2026.
This is therefore a historical review and a replacement guide: what Resso offered, why it exited India, what happened to subscriptions and playlists, and which services are safer choices today.
Is Resso available in India in 2026?
No. Resso’s Indian service ended on January 31, 2024. The app had already been removed from India’s major app stores, and new subscriptions were stopped. ByteDance said remaining subscription fees would be refunded.
An old installation may have continued working briefly around the shutdown, but a 2026 reader should not expect official streaming, authentication, billing, downloads, account recovery, or customer support to function.

Old reviews and search results can be misleading because they describe Resso when it was active. APK listings and screenshots are also not evidence that the service still operates.
What was Resso, and was it made by TikTok?
Resso was a music-streaming service owned by ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok. It was a separate app—not simply TikTok with music—and launched in India in March 2020.
ByteDance later launched TikTok Music in selected markets, including Indonesia and Brazil. In Indonesia, TikTok Music replaced Resso and offered account migration for existing users. That does not establish an India migration route. When Resso left India, ByteDance said it had no plans to launch TikTok Music in the country. TikTok’s announcement describes the Indonesian launch and migration process.

Resso’s features should be understood in the past tense. It was designed around music discovery and social interaction rather than functioning only as a conventional song library.
- Music streaming across multiple genres and Indian-language catalogues
- Playlists and personalised recommendations
- Social sharing and interaction around songs
- Lyrics-related discovery features
- Paid listening with ad-free playback, offline downloads, higher audio quality, and unlimited skips, according to historical reporting
These features made Resso an interesting competitor at launch, particularly for listeners who enjoyed discovering and sharing music. However, there is no responsible way to rate its current interface, recommendations, catalogue, or audio performance because the Indian service no longer exists.
Why did Resso shut down in India?
ByteDance publicly attributed the closure to “local market conditions.” Reporting also said Indian authorities had directed Apple and Google to remove Resso from their stores. Other reports connected the removal to government questions about the processing of Indian users’ data.
The public record does not justify reducing the shutdown to one definitive legal cause or describing Resso as having been formally banned under exactly the same order as TikTok. The careful conclusion is that regulatory and app-store pressure formed part of the operating environment, and ByteDance chose to end the Indian service rather than continue it. TechCrunch, Moneycontrol, and The Economic Times reported on the closure and its surrounding circumstances.

Resso’s shutdown also illustrates a broader weakness of licensed streaming services: catalogue access depends on territorial rights, app-store access, regulation, and the parent company’s willingness to keep operating in a market.
Can you still download or use Resso?
Not through official Indian app stores. Installing an old APK is not a genuine solution. An APK may install while the app can no longer authenticate accounts, stream licensed music, process payments, or receive security updates.
Avoid unofficial listings advertising “Resso Premium,” modified builds, recovery tools, or guaranteed access. Such downloads can expose users to credential theft, unwanted subscriptions, malware, or data collection. This does not mean every third-party file is automatically malicious; it means an unofficial file cannot prove that a discontinued service is available or safe.
If an old Resso installation remains on your phone, uninstall it unless you have a documented, legitimate reason to retain it. Do not enter payment details or reuse an important password in an unofficial replacement.

What happened to Resso subscriptions and playlists?
ByteDance said users would receive refunds for remaining subscription fees. Historical reporting does not establish that Indian users can now recover every playlist, like, listening history, or account record.
Resso-to-TikTok Music migration was documented for selected markets such as Indonesia, but no comparable India-specific migration process was confirmed. Former Indian users should treat their Resso data as potentially inaccessible unless ByteDance provides a current, official recovery mechanism.
Best Resso alternatives in India in 2026
The right replacement depends on what you liked about Resso. Indian-language coverage, free listening, discovery, offline playback, audio quality, and ecosystem integration point to different choices.

JioSaavn: best fit for Indian-language music
JioSaavn is the most natural replacement for former Resso users who prioritise Hindi, Bollywood, and regional Indian music. Its official product page advertises multilingual music, recommendations, podcasts, offline listening, and paid ad-free listening. Jio’s help pages say free listening is available in India and South Asia, while Pro adds benefits such as ad-free playback, downloads, offline listening, and higher audio quality.
Choose JioSaavn if local-market depth and a usable free option matter more than global playlist culture or advanced social listening. JioSaavn’s catalogue-size claims are first-party marketing claims, not independent measurements.

Spotify: best for discovery and playlists
Spotify is the stronger choice for listeners who valued Resso’s discovery-oriented feel, playlist building, sharing, and international catalogue. It is also a practical option for users who already have years of Spotify playlists.
Spotify’s India Premium pages describe benefits including ad-free listening, offline downloads, full playback control, and very-high-quality audio. One official India page showed Standard at ₹139 per month, an annual prepaid option at ₹1,390, Student at ₹69 per month, and Platinum at ₹299 per month when checked on August 16, 2026. Promotional pages may show different introductory offers, so verify the price, renewal terms, and eligibility immediately before subscribing.
Spotify is a poorer fit for someone who wants unrestricted, ad-free listening without paying or whose priority is a strongly India-focused regional catalogue.
YouTube Music: best for video-plus-music users
YouTube Music suits listeners who want official tracks alongside music videos, live performances, remixes, covers, and other material in YouTube’s wider ecosystem. It is especially attractive if YouTube Premium is already part of the household’s media setup.

The trade-off is consistency: unofficial uploads can disappear, change, or vary in quality, making the experience less controlled than a strictly curated audio catalogue. Exact YouTube Music India pricing should be checked on the live official signup page rather than copied from an outdated comparison.
Apple Music: best for Apple-device users and high-quality listening
Apple Music is a strong fit for iPhone, iPad, and Mac users who want library integration, family sharing, and a conventional music-library experience. It is less attractive for listeners whose main requirement is a robust free tier or who do not use Apple devices and services.
Apple’s India promotional terms show an individual subscription price of ₹99 per month after the applicable free promotional period. That document is a promotion, not a complete permanent plan table. Confirm live individual, student, and family pricing, trial eligibility, auto-renewal, and available audio features before subscribing.

- Choose JioSaavn if Hindi and regional Indian music plus free access are your priorities.
- Choose Spotify if personalised discovery, playlists, sharing, and an international ecosystem matter most.
- Choose YouTube Music if music videos, live performances, remixes, and YouTube Premium integration are important.
- Choose Apple Music if you use Apple devices and care about library integration and high-quality listening.
Before paying, check the exact catalogue for your favourite artists, whether offline downloads are included in your plan, the renewal price after any trial, supported devices, and whether the plan is recurring, prepaid, student, family, or account-specific.
Final verdict
Resso was an innovative ByteDance music app that combined streaming, discovery, and social features, but it is not a current Indian service. ByteDance shut it down in India on January 31, 2024, and an unofficial APK cannot restore a discontinued licensed platform.
