Relativism is a family of philosophical views, not the claim that every opinion is automatically true. A relativist account says that some truth, rightness, or justification depends on a framework or standpoint. When people disagree, that possibility is worth considering—but disagreement alone does not prove that truth is relative.
What does relativism mean?
Relativism concerns whether a claim’s truth, rightness, or justification depends on a standpoint: for example, a culture, conceptual framework, era, or context. The Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy’s entry “Relativism” describes the family of views as holding that something such as moral value, beauty, knowledge, taste, or meaning is relative to a particular framework or standpoint.
One way to explain the idea is to treat a statement such as “this is right” as incomplete until we know the standard in play: right according to which framework? This is a helpful model, not a definition accepted in exactly the same form by every philosopher. A relativist must specify what is relative, what it is relative to, and which subject area the claim covers.
Global and local relativism
Global relativism makes framework-dependence apply broadly, potentially to all beliefs. It faces a self-refutation challenge: if the theory itself is true only relative to a framework, it may not establish a universal conclusion; if it claims universal truth, it seems to exempt itself from its own rule.

Local relativism limits the claim to a particular domain, such as morality or aesthetics. It does not imply that every kind of truth is relative. A person could, for example, defend a relativist account of moral judgment while holding that some scientific claims are not relative in the same way.
Does disagreement show that truth is relative?
No. Disagreement can prompt a relativist argument, especially when people appear to reason from different standards and no shared, neutral procedure settles the dispute. But the existence or persistence of disagreement does not by itself show that the competing views are equally correct, or that there is no fact of the matter.
Disputants may lack relevant evidence, interpret evidence differently, use terms in different ways, or disagree about which standards should apply. A relativist can argue that some disagreements reflect genuinely different frameworks. A critic can answer that a shared answer remains possible, even if it is difficult to find.

To assess a disagreement, ask three questions:
- What is at issue? Is the dispute factual, moral, aesthetic, or about standards of knowledge?
- What standards do the sides use? Do they share evidence and criteria, or do their frameworks differ?
- Can the disagreement be criticized or resolved? Would new evidence or a shared standard change either position, and can people evaluate their own framework?
How do philosophical positions respond to disagreement?
The following positions answer different questions. The labels cover diverse views, so the table gives broad contrasts rather than a complete definition of each school.

| Position | What it says about disagreement | What it does not automatically imply |
|---|---|---|
| Objectivism | At least some claims have a correctness independent of the speakers’ standpoints. Disagreement can be mistaken or unresolved while a right answer exists. | That people already know the answer, or that every dispute can be settled easily. |
| Relativism | For some domain, correctness or justification depends on a framework or standpoint; incompatible judgments may be assessed by different standards. | That every opinion is true, or that all frameworks are equally good. |
| Skepticism | Questions whether we have adequate grounds to accept or reject certain claims. | That truth itself varies by framework. Doubting whether we can know a moral answer is distinct from saying moral truth is relative. |
| Non-cognitivism | In some accounts of moral language, moral utterances do not primarily state propositions that are true or false; they may instead express attitudes or prescribe action. | Relativism. Challenging whether moral claims report facts is different from making their truth framework-relative. |
These positions need not all be rivals in every debate: they can address different questions about truth, knowledge, language, or standards. The Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy entries “Relativism” and “Moral Relativism,” and the Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy entries “Epistemology and Relativism” and “Moral Relativism,” discuss these debates without establishing one universally accepted resolution.
Is moral relativism the same as cultural disagreement?
No. The observation that cultures disagree about right and wrong is a descriptive claim about moral diversity. Metaethical moral relativism is stronger: it proposes that the truth or justification of moral judgments depends on a standpoint or standard.

Nor is moral relativism identical to subjectivism. Moral relativist views commonly give a group, culture, or other standpoint a role in determining a judgment’s status; subjectivist views place the relevant standard at the individual level. Philosophers do not always use these labels identically, so the substance of a particular argument matters more than the label alone.
Does relativism mean “anything goes”?
Not necessarily. A relativist may hold that judgments can be assessed by standards within a framework, rather than that there are no standards at all. The harder question is how a view handles conflicts between frameworks: whether one can criticize a practice by standards it shares, appeal to a broader standard, or defend a framework without treating every alternative as equally acceptable.

Is tolerance a consequence of moral relativism?
Tolerance is a normative principle about how people should treat those with whom they disagree. It is separate from the metaethical claim that moral judgments are relative. Even if a relativist endorses tolerance, an additional argument is needed to show why that principle follows; relativism alone does not establish it. The Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy’s “Moral Relativism” entry distinguishes the ideas and notes that most philosophers reject the simple inference from relativism to tolerance.
What is epistemic relativism?
Epistemic relativism concerns knowledge or justification rather than moral rightness. Some versions hold that standards for evaluating knowledge claims depend on a framework. A semantic version makes the truth of a knowledge-ascription—such as “she knows that the bridge is safe”—depend on the standards operating in the context in which that claim is assessed.
This does not simply mean that people have different beliefs, or that anyone can know anything by choosing a convenient standard. It is a thesis about how knowledge or justification claims are evaluated. The Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy’s “Epistemology and Relativism” entry discusses both traditional and semantic forms.

Why does the debate go back to Protagoras and Plato?
Ancient discussions of Protagoras offer an influential version of the challenge. As the Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy’s “Cognitive Relativism” entry recounts Plato’s objections, if each person is the measure of truth, people would be infallible about their own judgments. The view also appears to undermine itself: if someone rejects relativism, relativism would have to count that rejection as correct for that person.
These are Plato’s objections as presented in the reference entry, not a conclusive modern refutation of every form of relativism. Later and contemporary versions differ in what they make relative and how they answer self-refutation. The debate remains open to argument about whether a given account can explain disagreement without collapsing into either universal truth or “anything goes.”
