Santosh K Singh’s book The Deras: Culture, Diversity and Politics examines how Dera Sacha Sauda (DSS), led by Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, has maintained a strong public presence amid serious controversies. In an excerpt published by Scroll.in, Singh attributes that visibility to the leader’s carefully cultivated image, culturally resonant messaging, outreach and follower networks. These are the author’s analysis and observations—not an independently established explanation of the organisation’s influence.

What the book argues about Dera Sacha Sauda’s reach

In the Scroll.in excerpt, Singh portrays DSS as a leader-centered organisation whose public presence extends through imagery, events, media and local relationships. His central point is that these elements can help explain why the dera remains visible despite controversies involving its leader. The excerpt offers an interpretation, not proof that any one factor caused the organisation’s continued reach.

Singh’s account also distinguishes between the dera’s public presentation and the author’s interpretation of its appeal. Promotional claims, event observations and analysis are different kinds of evidence; they should not be treated as interchangeable.

What Singh observed at a 2013 Delhi congregation

A managed, multi-state gathering

Singh recounts attending a 2013 congregation near Japanese Park in Rohini, Delhi. He describes a large, carefully managed event attended by followers from several north Indian states. The sermon, as he recalls it, addressed family life, respect for elders and healthy living.

Practical language and everyday concerns

The author says the leader’s direct, practical language appeared to connect with attendees. He describes many as underclass and says people sought help with illness, childlessness or misfortune. This is Singh’s characterization of what he saw and inferred at that event; it is not a survey of followers or their reasons for attending.

How image and regional cues figure in the account

A leader-centered visual identity

Singh describes posters and calendars showing Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh in bright clothing and sunglasses, often in aspirational or heroic settings. He says DSS merchandise and media placed the leader’s image at the centre of the experience. In the author’s reading, this made the leader’s persona a prominent part of the organisation’s public culture.

Merchandise, music and health products

At the Rohini congregation, Singh observed lockets, calendars, posters, herbal medicines, energy tonics, toys, photo albums, music albums and CDs. He connects the display of energy tonics and protein powder with Haryana’s interest in power sports such as wrestling. These are observations about one event in 2013, not evidence of what DSS sells or distributes now, and not an endorsement of the products’ health claims.

Names and plural identity

Singh argues that the use of the names Ram, Rahim and Insan resonated with the region’s plural identities. He presents DSS as a leader-centered enterprise that also draws people alienated from mainstream religious anchors. That account of the dera’s identity and appeal belongs to the author’s interpretation; the excerpt does not establish how followers themselves explain their affiliation.

Outreach, publicity and follower networks

Charitable work in promotional coverage

Singh reports that DSS advertorials published in April 2022 highlighted charitable activities such as providing tricycles to disabled people, house keys to people described as homeless, and ration kits. He says similar promotional coverage appeared across several locations. This tells readers what the advertorials publicised, not the independently verified scale or impact of the activities.

A promotional follower figure is not a census

According to Singh, the 2022 advertorials cited “six crore followers” and referred to DSS’s founding by Shah Mastana Baluchistani on 28 April 1948. The six-crore number is a promotional claim reported by the author, not an independently verified membership count.

Local relationships and media

The excerpt describes local fellowship networks alongside a central command, and continuing publicity through videos and social media. Singh argues that these networks and media help account for DSS’s visibility. The excerpt does not independently verify the organisation’s structure or measure the effect of its communications.

How the book handles controversy—and what it cannot establish now

The excerpt refers to Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh’s convictions in multiple cases, including rape and murder, and discusses controversy surrounding the 2007 Jam-e-Insan event. It also recounts historical furlough and parole examples, including a 40-day parole beginning 14 October 2022. These references are part of a February 2025 book excerpt, not a complete legal history or an update on his legal or custody status as of October 2026.

Singh also says Gurmeet Singh received an honorary doctorate from a London-based university in 2016, but the excerpt does not name the university. It therefore does not provide enough information to identify or assess that claim further.

About the excerpt

The excerpt is from Santosh K Singh’s The Deras: Culture, Diversity and Politics, published by Penguin India. It is useful as an account of how one author interprets DSS’s public culture and persistence, while its event observations, reports of promotional claims and analysis should remain clearly distinguished.
