These positions and scores are the Reddit post author’s reported composite results. They are not an independent assessment of the shows or proof of a platform-wide vote.

How the post calculated its ranking
The author says the list combines ratings from IMDb, Rotten Tomatoes, Metacritic and TMDB. Scores were normalized to a 0–100 scale and combined as a weighted average of available sources. When a source lacked a rating, it was omitted and the remaining weights were renormalized. IMDb and TMDB vote counts influenced how much those sources counted. The post author’s own summary is: “Only the final ranking is my calculation. The rest are taken from their respective sources.”
Eligibility and exclusions
The author considered only the 500 shows with the most IMDb votes, excluded entries missing ratings from two or more sources, and handled animation separately. Those choices shape what can appear: a show with fewer IMDb votes may be absent regardless of its reputation, and separating animation means the list should not be read as a complete ranking across every kind of television.

What to make of the results
The top three reflect a mixture of acclaimed drama and a war miniseries, while the full twenty crosses genres and formats: prestige drama, sitcoms, period drama, science and nature documentaries, and sports documentary. That breadth is useful if you want suggestions from a varied list, but the positions are outcomes of the poster’s chosen inputs and weighting—not a definitive verdict on television history.
The author also acknowledges recency bias in online rankings. A popularity cutoff based on IMDb votes and a composite of current online ratings can favor titles with more recent visibility. The list’s inclusion of a 2025 series alongside older television makes the date and method particularly important context.

There is no single ranking that represents Reddit as a whole. A separate Reddit-user survey archived by List Challenges was voted on in January 2017, using a different process and a different moment in television culture. Its reported voter demographics—86.8% male respondents and an average voter age of 24.7—belong to that survey only, not to the later ratings composite. See the archived survey listing.
Other all-time lists use still different inputs. For example, List Obsession describes a ranking that aggregates 27 ranked lists and averages show positions. A composite built from other rankings is not interchangeable with one that combines audience and critic ratings; source selection, popularity thresholds, weighting, treatment of missing data, and inclusion rules can all change the result.
