Short answer: Redbox’s digital service effectively collapsed in August 2024 after its parent company entered bankruptcy and moved toward liquidation. Roku removed or disabled the Redbox app, while reports found that the iOS, Android and PlayStation versions were also unusable or unable to load content. Customers who had purchased films or television shows through Redbox On Demand therefore lost reliable access to their digital libraries. No confirmed library-transfer scheme or broad public refund program was identified in contemporary reporting.
What was actually shut down?
This story concerns Redbox On Demand, not necessarily every physical Redbox disc transaction. Redbox operated several related services:

- Physical kiosks: DVD and Blu-ray rentals, and in some cases disc sales.
- Redbox On Demand: transactional digital rentals and purchases.
- Redbox Free On Demand and Redbox Free Live TV: advertising-supported streaming services.
- Redbox apps: the software used on Roku, mobile devices, PlayStation, smart TVs and other platforms.
Redbox launched its on-demand service in December 2017, advertising both rentals and purchases. Its launch announcement also said purchased titles could be downloaded for offline viewing. Redbox’s SEC filing later described a digital business built around transactional video, ad-supported on-demand programming and live television.
The affected customers were people who bought digital on-demand content. Someone who bought a physical DVD or Blu-ray still had a disc, subject to ordinary issues such as damage, hardware failure and regional restrictions.

How the shutdown unfolded
- 2022: Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment acquired Redbox.
- June 2024: Chicken Soup filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.
- July 2024: the case moved toward Chapter 7 liquidation.
- August 2024: Roku’s Redbox app was removed or disabled, and other versions were reported to be nonfunctional.
Ars Technica reported that Roku users saw a message saying Redbox no longer supported the app. During point-in-time testing, the Apple and Android apps could still be downloaded but did not load usable content. The PlayStation version reportedly produced an account-signup error.
That distinction matters: an app can remain listed in an app store while the underlying account, authentication, catalog or playback servers are unavailable. The practical failure was broader than Roku removing an icon. Redbox’s access chain was breaking:
Account → entitlement record → content licence → app authentication → playback or download.

The available reporting does not prove that every title stopped working simultaneously on every platform, or that every previously downloaded file was deleted. User experiences could have differed by device, cached data, account status and location. But it did show that customers could no longer reliably reach the libraries they had paid to use.
What did “purchase” mean?
Redbox marketed these transactions as purchases, but a digital purchase is not automatically the same as owning an unrestricted video file. In most platform-based services, the customer receives an entitlement governed by the service’s account system, technical controls and licensing arrangements.
Redbox’s advertised downloads did not necessarily mean DRM-free, transferable files. A downloaded title might have been tied to the Redbox application, an authorised device, periodic account verification or Redbox’s continuing ability to deliver the licensed content. The available evidence does not establish whether every Redbox download would continue playing indefinitely after the company’s servers became unavailable.
Nor does the shutdown itself establish that Redbox committed fraud or violated consumer-protection law. The precise legal position would depend on the applicable Redbox terms, the transaction, the payment method, relevant consumer law and the bankruptcy process. The clearest demonstrated fact is practical: customers did not possess independent copies that could simply be opened in another player.
Could customers recover their movies or money?
Contemporary reports from WILX, WRDW and Ars Technica found no clear public Redbox refund programme, reliable customer-service route or documented migration of Redbox libraries to another service.

Affected customers can still preserve evidence and check whether anything remains accessible:
- Identify the transaction. Confirm whether it was a digital purchase, a rental, a subscription benefit, a promotion or a physical disc purchase.
- Check old devices. Look at Roku, Apple, Android, PlayStation, smart-TV and computer devices where Redbox was installed. A cached download may be present, but its continued playback is unverified.
- Save proof. Keep receipts, account emails, app-store records, card statements, screenshots of the Redbox library and error messages, and notes showing the device and date of failure.
- Check the payment route. A transaction may have been billed directly by Redbox, through an app store or through another payment intermediary. Contacting the intermediary can clarify the record, but it does not guarantee a refund.
- Investigate the bankruptcy estate carefully. A bankruptcy claim is not the same as a routine refund. Consumers may be general unsecured creditors, and recovery depends on available assets and creditor priority. Definitive advice requires the current court records or a qualified bankruptcy professional.
A chargeback is also uncertain. Older transactions may fall outside card-dispute deadlines, and a bank may reject a claim if the payment was authorised or too old. Do not assume that a chargeback will succeed.

No transfer mechanism was identified in the contemporary coverage. A film being available on Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video, Fandango at Home or another retailer does not mean that a Redbox entitlement can be imported there. Digital storefronts generally maintain separate accounts, licences and rights databases.

Microsoft’s support information says existing Movies & TV purchases remain available through supported Microsoft apps and cannot be directly moved to another service. Apple’s support documentation describes access to purchased media through Apple’s account and supported-device ecosystem, including downloads on certain devices. Neither policy is a guarantee of ownership independent of that company’s systems.

Physical media is not absolutely permanent: discs can degrade, hardware can break and regional restrictions may apply. It is nevertheless less dependent on the survival of a particular digital storefront.
Questions to ask before buying digital video
- Is the download a standard, transferable video file or an app-specific file?
- Does offline playback require periodic online verification?
- Can the title play on another device or only within one application?
- What happens if the retailer closes or loses a studio licence?
- Is there a published replacement or refund policy?
- Is the entitlement controlled by the retailer, an app store or both?
The Redbox case is not proof that every digital storefront will fail in the same way. It is a reminder to read “purchase” in context. Unless a service provides an independent, playable and transferable file, digital access remains tied to technical and business systems outside the customer’s control.
The bottom line
Redbox’s 2024 bankruptcy and app shutdown left digital customers without a reliable way to watch films and television shows they had purchased through Redbox On Demand. The strongest practical steps are to distinguish digital from physical purchases, preserve receipts and failure evidence, check old devices without assuming downloads will work, and investigate any official bankruptcy process. There was no documented path for moving Redbox purchases to another retailer, and no refund or chargeback outcome should be promised.
