Real Places in Pixar and Disney Films: What Exists and What’s Inspired

Toronto, New York City and Australian geography ground several Pixar films, while Santa Cecilia and other animated towns are fictional. The verified Disney examples are more limited than the original title suggests.

Some animated-film locations are real cities or landscapes; others are fictional places shaped by real-world research. The verified examples below show where Pixar’s settings connect to actual geography—and why the available evidence does not support naming the 13 Disney locations promised in the original title.

What counts as a real film location?

A film can use a real city as its setting, borrow visual details from a real place, or create a fictional town inspired by a broader region. Those are different claims. A production research trip does not make its fictional setting a real town, and a theme-park recreation does not establish that a storybook kingdom exists geographically.

The official material available for this topic verifies six useful Pixar examples, but it does not identify a complete list of 12 Pixar locations or the promised 13 Disney locations. Disney’s official video page says places in Disney films are inspired by real locations, but its accessible text does not name them. Rather than fill those gaps with guesses, this guide distinguishes confirmed settings from documented inspirations.

What real places inspired Pixar movies?

Coco: Mexican villages and regions

Santa Cecilia, the town in Coco, is fictional. Pixar production designer Harley Jessup says it is “inspired by real villages in Mexico.” The film’s town square, family compound and cemetery are elements of that invented setting, not evidence that Santa Cecilia is a named real village. Pixar’s production account describes research visits to museums, markets, plazas, workshops, churches, haciendas and cemeteries around Mexico over three years. A Disney report names Oaxaca, Michoacán and Mexico City among the places whose communities informed the film. The Land of the Dead’s visual structure also drew on Mexico City’s history and Tenochtitlán, the former Aztec city surrounded by water. Pixar’s Coco production page and Disney’s report on the filmmakers’ Mexico trip describe those connections.

Turning Red: Toronto

Turning Red is set in Toronto, Canada, in the early 2000s. Pixar artists studied two real Toronto Chinatown streets as well as the city’s skyline, architecture and street signs. The fictional concert venue began with Toronto’s SkyDome dimensions as a reference, then was artistically rescaled. Toronto is the real city behind the setting; the film’s specific street layouts and compositions remain stylized animation. Pixar’s production page for Turning Red details the research.

Soul: New York City and an invented afterlife

The city portions of Soul are grounded in New York City. The filmmakers visited jazz clubs, and the Half Note was designed to represent the scale of a typical jazz club rather than depict a specific named venue. By contrast, the Great Before was created from scratch. New York is a real-world setting for part of the story, not a geographic model for its afterlife world. See Pixar’s Soul production page.

Finding Nemo: The Great Barrier Reef, Sydney and the East Australian Current

Finding Nemo draws on real Australian geography. Pixar identifies Nemo’s home as the Great Barrier Reef and says the East Australian Current supplied a template for the current sequence. The production page also connects scenes to Sydney Harbour and North Sydney, including a seaside dentist’s office used as a reference for the rescue. The specific adventures are fictional: a visit to a submarine docked at a San Francisco pier informed the design of a fictional sunken-submarine sequence, not a real wreck in the reef. Pixar’s Finding Nemo production page explains these references.

Onward: Los Angeles and Sacramento as inspiration

New Mushroomton, the fantasy suburb in Onward, is not a real town. Production designer Noah Klocek says the team drew on parts of the Los Angeles region, including Los Feliz as it might have looked about 20 years earlier, Frogtown near Los Angeles, and suburbs of Sacramento. These are regional and visual influences, not places where the brothers’ story took place. The distinction is described on Pixar’s Onward production page.

Luca: Italian research, fictional Portorosso

Filmmakers behind Luca traveled to Italy to study local culture, architecture and the setting’s atmosphere. Director Enrico Casarosa also took team members to dinner at his parents’ home in Genoa. That makes Genoa a documented production-research connection; it does not establish the fictional seaside town of Portorosso as a real place. Disney’s official Luca fact sheet describes the research.

Are Disney movie places based on real locations?

Yes, Disney says some places in its films are inspired by real locations, but the official page available for that claim does not enumerate the places. It therefore cannot substantiate a specific list of 13 Disney examples. The official Disney video page, “Disney Places Inspired by Real Locations,” confirms the general premise only.

Arendelle is fictional, even at life size

Disneyland Paris has announced a life-size recreation of Arendelle in its World of Frozen themed environment. That is a designed attraction based on the fictional kingdom from Frozen, not proof that Arendelle is a real-world town. Disney’s company account describes the attraction in its announcement about Disney Adventure World and World of Frozen.

Tangled does not have a verified exact town here

Disney’s official film page for Tangled describes an animated fantasy adventure but does not identify a real town or landmark as its exact model. Without a direct source naming one, it would be misleading to assign the kingdom or its locations a real-world counterpart.

Can you visit the real places behind these films?

You can visit the named real cities and regions—such as Toronto, New York City, parts of Mexico, Sydney and the Great Barrier Reef—subject to local access and conditions. But visiting a city or landscape used as inspiration is not the same as visiting a film location where a scene literally happened. For fictional places such as Santa Cecilia, New Mushroomton and Portorosso, the cited production accounts establish inspiration, not a real counterpart to tour.
