Those sources do not establish a verified ranking of 12 currently operating rides, so this guide covers the three whose speed claims can be supported rather than filling out the list with guesses.
What are the fastest roller coasters in Florida, and where can I find them?
Here, “fastest” means advertised maximum speed—not average speed, ride intensity, height, or an award ranking. The sources below support these three prominent rides, but they do not establish that they are the exact top three among every coaster currently operating in Florida.
| Coaster | Park and city | Advertised speed | Other published details |
|---|---|---|---|
| Iron Gwazi | Busch Gardens Tampa Bay, Tampa | 76 mph | 206-foot peak; 91-degree drop; 48-inch minimum rider height. The park describes it as a wood-and-steel hybrid coaster. |
| Mako | SeaWorld Orlando, Orlando | Up to 73 mph | Up to 200 feet tall; 54-inch minimum rider height. |
| Jurassic World VelociCoaster | Universal’s Islands of Adventure, Orlando | Up to 70 mph | Orlando’s tourism organization reports a height of over 150 feet. Universal describes it as Florida’s fastest and tallest launch coaster. |
Iron Gwazi: 76 mph at Busch Gardens Tampa Bay
Busch Gardens lists Iron Gwazi’s top speed as 76 mph and its peak as 206 feet. The ride also has a 91-degree drop, and the park sets a 48-inch minimum height requirement. Its hybrid wood-and-steel construction distinguishes it from the all-steel coasters in this short comparison. Check the official Iron Gwazi page for current ride details and availability.
Mako: up to 73 mph at SeaWorld Orlando
SeaWorld lists Mako at up to 73 mph and up to 200 feet tall, with a 54-inch minimum rider height. The park’s Mako attraction page provides its published specifications. SeaWorld also lists Kraken and Manta among its coaster attractions, but the cited attraction listing does not provide speed figures that would support placing them in this speed comparison.

Jurassic World VelociCoaster: up to 70 mph at Islands of Adventure
Universal characterizes VelociCoaster as Florida’s fastest and tallest launch coaster. Orlando’s tourism organization reports a top speed of up to 70 mph and a height exceeding 150 feet. “Fastest and tallest” in Universal’s description is specifically qualified as a claim about launch coasters; it does not mean the fastest coaster overall in the figures shown here. See Universal’s ride page and Orlando’s visitor information.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why this is not a verified top-12 ranking
The available park and tourism pages support the three speed figures above, not a complete list of 12 currently operating Florida coasters in speed order. For example, Busch Gardens describes Cheetah Hunt as a triple-launch steel coaster, but the cited official page does not state a speed. Without a comparable published figure, it cannot be placed honestly in a speed ranking.
Rank #2
- 546 ASSORTED PIECES –This K’NEX Education set includes 546 parts, plus a battery-powered motor, for a single child or a team of two to three children building a working roller coaster. Two additional models are also included in this set — a ramp and a half-pipe — which can be built one at a time. The set requires two AA batteries, which are not included.
- OFFERS HANDS-ON LEARNING – K’NEX Education models offer proactive opportunities for introducing children to scientific inquiry, investigation, and experimentation. Inquiry-based lessons challenge young learners as they build, investigate, problem-solve, discuss, and evaluate scientific and design principles in action.
- EXPERIMENT GUIDE – Once a ride is built, an activity booklet guides learners through three hands-on, inquiry-based experiments. This experiment guide aligns with the national STEM standards and is designed for grades 5‒9. Students will learn about the relationships between time, distance, speed, and more!
- PROMOTES TEAMWORK – This educational engineering set is more fun when constructed with friends. One to three kids can put their heads together and figure out the structure, exchanging ideas as they tinker with the bits and parts, and solving the model faster through teamwork. They’ll build camaraderie and develop social skills as they play.
- STEAMagination: It’s the connection of STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts & math) with a child’s natural curiosity and creativity and it powers the fun of each and every K’NEX building set. Building with K’NEX puts children on a path towards a fundamental understanding of STEAM/STEM subjects.
Likewise, a 2025 Amusement Today Top 25 Steel Roller Coasters list ranks ride quality, not speed: VelociCoaster placed second, Iron Gwazi fourth, and Mako twenty-second. Those award positions cannot be used to fill gaps in a speed chart. VISIT FLORIDA’s statewide coaster guide offers broader park context, but it was published several years ago and does not establish which rides are operating now: Florida roller-coaster guide.
