Ray Chan, the art director and production designer whose Marvel credits included Deadpool & Wolverine, died on April 23, 2024, according to the Television Academy. He was 56, contemporaneous reports said. His cause of death was not disclosed in the reports reviewed here; there is no substantiated cause to report.

Chan was a British film and television art-department professional whose work included art direction and production design. The Television Academy lists Manchester, England, as his birthplace and December 1, 1967, as his birth date. His career spanned large-scale Marvel productions as well as other feature films and a television series.

The Television Academy records April 23, 2024, as Chan’s date of passing. The Independent reported that he died near his home in Wales on that date. TheWrap and ComicBook.com reported that no cause of death had been disclosed. Those reports do not establish why he died, and speculation should not be treated as fact.

What did Marvel and Ryan Reynolds say about him?
Marvel Studios leaders Kevin Feige and Louis D’Esposito remembered Chan as both a friend and a talented collaborator. They said he brought creativity and attention to detail to each film and helped bring out the best in the departments he worked with. They also praised his generosity and ability to turn an early idea into something beautiful, in a tribute reported by TheWrap.
Reynolds, whom The Independent identifies as a star of Deadpool & Wolverine, described Chan as “as important a creative force on Deadpool & Wolverine as the writers, director and stars.” He also wrote that Chan “built entire worlds from scratch” in collaborative and inclusive ways. The remarks were reported by The Independent.
