A Raspberry Pi 5 can have a low monthly cash cost if you already own the equipment and have stable, unlimited home broadband; a VPS avoids buying and powering a computer at home but adds a recurring bill and must be checked for renewal price, bandwidth and encoding capacity. Compare both over the same 30 days, including the costs and work required to keep the stream running.
What you are comparing
A Raspberry Pi 5 streams from your home: you buy and configure the hardware, connect it to power and broadband, and handle interruptions. A VPS rents a remote server: you configure the streaming software and pay the provider, while still verifying that the plan can sustain your intended stream.
Neither “low-power board” nor “streaming VPS” proves that a setup will reliably encode your particular video and run continuously. The examples below are not like-for-like tested plans. Treat provider specifications and prices as claims to verify before buying.
Compare the costs over 30 days
Raspberry Pi 5 at home
- Initial setup: Include the board, suitable USB-C power supply, storage, case or cooling if required, and any backup-power equipment. Raspberry Pi’s setup guidance recommends an appropriate supply; Pi 5 is listed for a 5 V, 5 A supply, and the official 27 W USB-C supply. Raspberry Pi OS Lite setup recommends at least 8 GB of SD storage. A 5 V, 3 A supply limits downstream USB current to 600 mA. See Raspberry Pi getting started documentation.
- Electricity: Calculate average measured wall draw in watts × 720 hours ÷ 1,000 to estimate kWh for 30 days, then multiply by your marginal electricity tariff. Raspberry Pi reported around 12 W peak consumption under its most intensive workload; at that draw, 720 hours would use 8.64 kWh. That is an illustration based on peak workload, not typical streaming consumption. Measure your setup at the wall if you want a useful estimate. India’s tariffs vary by state and slab; use your bill or the relevant Central Electricity Authority tariff compilation, not a supposed national average.
- Internet: Count broadband as an added cost only if streaming requires an upgrade or triggers paid data use. Check the ISP’s fair-use terms, upload stability and outage history.
- Reliability and time: Power cuts, router failures, home ISP downtime, storage wear and time spent recovering a stream are operational costs, even when they do not appear as a monthly bill.
VPS in India
- Rental: Compare the actual renewal bill, not just an introductory offer. Confirm bandwidth allowance and overage rules, CPU or GPU and encoder capacity, operating system, remote access, permitted stream count and what support covers.
- Example listing: NivoHost’s page advertises a lowest streaming RDP tier at ₹699/month for one stream at 360p/10fps, with 20 TB bandwidth, 2 CPU cores and 4 GB RAM; its ₹999 tier advertises 480p/15fps. The provider advertises tax-included pricing and 20 TB on the listed tiers. These are provider claims, not independent performance results; verify current availability, renewal terms and stream policy directly at NivoHost.
- Bandwidth is not encoding proof: At 1080p30 using YouTube’s recommended H.264 video bitrate of 5 Mbps, video alone uses roughly 1.62 TB over 30 days, before audio and protocol overhead. That is below the example plan’s advertised 20 TB allowance, but does not establish that the VPS can encode and deliver the stream continuously.
Use your actual inputs for a break-even estimate
Let H be the complete Pi setup cost, L its useful life in months, E measured monthly electricity cost, I incremental internet cost, and R your estimate for maintenance time and interruptions. A rough Pi monthly equivalent is H/L + E + I + R. Let V be the verified VPS renewal bill plus data or software add-ons and comparable management or interruption costs. Compare the two over the same period, and label estimates as estimates. There is no defensible break-even number without your own costs and provider terms.

Check the stream profile before choosing hardware
YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends RTMP or RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds), and AAC or MP3 audio. It supports up to 60 fps. Test with representative movement and audio, and monitor stream health. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate guidance.
| H.264 profile | YouTube recommended video bitrate | Approximate video-only data over 30 days |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 3 Mbps | 0.97 TB |
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps | 1.62 TB |
| 1080p60 | 6 Mbps | 1.94 TB |
Monthly data figures are calculations from constant video bitrate over 30 days, in decimal units; they exclude audio and protocol overhead. YouTube’s recommended AV1/H.265 rates differ—for example, 6 Mbps for 720p30 and 10 Mbps for 1080p30—so use the correct codec column in YouTube’s guidance rather than mixing values. Run a speed test and confirm upload capacity under real home or server conditions.

What the Pi 5 specifications do—and do not—tell you
Raspberry Pi 5 is a 64-bit quad-core board announced in 2023. Its video hardware includes a 4Kp60 HEVC decoder, but a decoder specification does not establish real-time encoding performance for a particular OBS or FFmpeg configuration. The available sources do not provide a sustained Pi 5 encoding benchmark for the stream profiles above. Test your actual content, codec, resolution and frame rate before relying on it for a continuous channel.

Raspberry Pi’s launch announcement listed historical launch prices of US$60 for the 4GB model and US$80 for the 8GB model; those are not current India prices. A retailer listing snapshot retrieved in 2026 showed a Pi 5 4GB board at ₹6,499 including GST. That listing is time-sensitive, and the board price excludes setup and recurring costs. Check current stock and the full accessory bill before treating it as your purchase cost. See the Raspberry Pi 5 launch announcement and the India retailer listing.
Choosing between the Pi and VPS
- Consider the Pi if you already own suitable hardware, your home upload and power are dependable, and you are willing to configure and recover the system yourself. Measure electricity and test encoding at the intended profile.
- Consider a VPS if you prefer a remote machine and a recurring bill to a home hardware setup. Before paying, confirm the renewal price, allowed use, bandwidth terms and sustained encoding performance at your target settings.
- Do not decide on headline price alone. Compare the full initial setup plus power, internet changes and your time against VPS renewals, add-ons and equivalent interruption costs. Include the work and recovery responsibility, not just the invoice.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a managed option rather than a Pi or self-managed VPS, StreamNeo keeps an uploaded video or playlist looping as a YouTube live stream from the cloud. The setup is: upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, then go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on; the same per-slot price applies to any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. Start the free day on StreamNeo.

Common cost and setup mistakes
- Using the Pi’s peak power as its normal bill: 12 W is a manufacturer-stated peak-workload figure. Measure average wall draw for your real stream and calculate from your own tariff.
- Forgetting non-board setup costs: A board-only listing does not include the power supply, storage, cooling or backup power you may need.
- Counting video bitrate as total data: The monthly data estimates exclude audio and protocol overhead. Check actual usage and the provider or ISP policy.
- Treating advertised bandwidth as proof of suitability: A large allowance does not confirm that the server has enough sustained encoding capacity or that continuous streaming is permitted.
- Comparing an introductory VPS offer with a full hardware purchase: Use the VPS renewal price and compare bills over the same period, while accounting for the Pi’s initial setup and ongoing costs.
- Assuming a stream is automatically safe to run: YouTube’s technical ingest requirements do not grant rights to music or video. Use material you own or are licensed to stream, and check YouTube’s rules on copyright and reused content before scheduling a loop.
