Spoilers for the 2018 TV series and the film Rascal Does Not Dream of a Dreaming Girl. The TV season ends with Sakuta losing the Kaede he has known for two years. Her original memories return and displace the memories of the Kaede he knew. The Shoko storyline is not resolved until the film, which revises the events around a Christmas Eve accident so Sakuta and Mai live and Shoko survives.

What happens at the end of the TV series?

In episode 13, the original Kaede’s traumatic memories return. The Kaede who had been living with Sakuta loses the memories and identity that shaped their shared life. Sakuta is left grieving that loss. The episode describes a change in memory; it does not say that Kaede physically dies. The official episode 13 synopsis frames this as the season’s emotional endpoint.

The TV anime has 13 episodes, and its finale also turns the story toward Shoko. It is a painful ending to Kaede’s immediate arc, not the resolution of the broader Sakuta–Mai–Shoko plot.

Is the Shoko story resolved in the TV finale?

No. Rascal Does Not Dream of a Dreaming Girl is the feature-length continuation. Its official synopsis introduces the gravely ill middle-school Shoko alongside an adult version of her, and Aniplex describes the film as answering questions left by the television series. The movie synopsis and Aniplex’s announcement establish that continuation.

To understand why the film’s ending changes the fate of several characters, follow the cause-and-effect chain in the movie—not the TV finale.

How does the movie’s ending work?

Shoko’s illness connects her future to Sakuta

The film reveals that Shoko’s future is tied to a heart transplant and to Sakuta’s possible death in a Christmas Eve traffic accident. In the future the characters first encounter, the accident also results in Mai’s death. Shoko’s survival and the accident are therefore bound together in a way that puts Sakuta and Mai in danger.

Sakuta tries to change the outcome

Sakuta confronts the possibility that his death could provide the heart Shoko needs. He cannot accept saving her at the cost of his own life—and especially not if Mai is also lost. The movie’s crisis is not simply a choice between one life and another: Sakuta and Mai’s relationship is tested by the knowledge of what the accident might mean for Shoko.

Shoko resets the future

In the revised outcome, Sakuta saves Mai and himself. That prevents the accident from supplying Shoko’s donor heart, so Shoko chooses to reset her future and avoid meeting Sakuta. The history that brought them together is erased from ordinary continuity, but it leaves traces in the people who lived through it.

The beach scene confirms Shoko survives

The ending shows Shoko alive at the beach. Mai’s work on a film about heart transplantation helps open a path for Shoko to receive a donor in the revised timeline. Sakuta and Mai encounter Shoko and recognize her through impressions left by the discarded history—described in the story as memories or dreams rather than a detailed scientific mechanism.

So, yes: in the movie’s final timeline, Shoko survives, while Sakuta and Mai also live. The ending preserves the emotional connection among them without restoring the original sequence of events exactly as it happened.

Why does Sakuta still remember Shoko?

The film leaves fragments of the erased history behind. Sakuta and Mai retain impressions that draw them toward Shoko, and the beach encounter makes those lingering connections visible. The story does not present this as real-world time travel or a medically grounded process; it uses the series’ fictional supernatural device, “puberty syndrome,” to tell a story about memory, choice and connection.

The official TV introduction uses puberty syndrome to frame unusual adolescent experiences, including Mai becoming imperceptible to other people. It is a fictional premise, not a clinical diagnosis. The official series introduction explains the show’s framing.

Which ending should you watch?

If you mean… What happens What it resolves Continue with
TV season finale The Kaede Sakuta knew loses her memories when the original Kaede’s memories return. Kaede’s immediate arc and Sakuta’s grief; it opens the next story. Rascal Does Not Dream of a Dreaming Girl
Movie conclusion The timeline changes around the Christmas Eve accident and Shoko’s illness. The central Shoko–Sakuta–Mai crisis and the final beach encounter. Later franchise installments

If you are asking whether the 2019 film is the franchise’s final installment, it is not: official pages describe Rascal Does Not Dream of a Knapsack Kid as beginning around Mai’s graduation, and Rascal Does Not Dream of a Dear Friend as the series conclusion. See the official Knapsack Kid page and the official Dear Friend page.

What the ending means emotionally

The movie’s resolution can be read as saying that a relationship is not reduced to a timeline or a complete set of memories. Shoko gives up the future in which she meets Sakuta, yet the choices made in that erased history still shape the route that brings the characters back into one another’s lives. That is an interpretation of the ending, not an official explanation of its supernatural mechanics.
