Ransom Canyon is a fictional Texas Hill Country town at the center of a contemporary Western family drama that mixes romance and mystery. Season 1 follows ranch owner Staten Kirkland and dance-hall operator Quinn O’Grady as their complicated history unfolds alongside the conflicts of the town’s ranching families. The series is set in Texas but was filmed in New Mexico.
What is Ransom Canyon about?
The story brings together three ranching families facing questions of love, land, family legacy and how to protect their way of life. Staten Kirkland (Josh Duhamel) is a stoic ranch owner grieving his wife. Quinn O’Grady (Minka Kelly), a former concert pianist, returns from New York and runs the local dance hall. Their long-running romantic tension is one strand in a larger ensemble drama.
Other threads involve rivals, young residents and family members. The season’s official episode descriptions point to Staten’s investigation, Quinn’s relationships and choices, the dance hall reopening, drifter Yancy’s arrival, and conflicts among younger characters. Creator and showrunner April Blair described the intended tone as “big and escapist,” combining romance, drama and mystery. Netflix Tudum’s interview and cast guide provide further context.

Is Ransom Canyon a real town, and where was the show filmed?
Ransom Canyon is fictional, and the story is set in Texas. Production took place in New Mexico, including Albuquerque studios, historic Los Poblanos and nearby ranches—not in Texas. Netflix reports that the production hired more than 700 New Mexicans, with 380 crew members, 300 background actors and 40 principal actors. Those are Netflix-reported production figures, not independently audited totals.
Netflix also says the production used mobile batteries, solar trailers and solar battery systems to create a renewable-energy microgrid, and reduced diesel-generator fuel use by more than 50%. It reported that basecamp and catering ran almost entirely on solar power. Line producer and co-executive producer Suzanne Geiger said, “We went from April to June without turning on a generator.” These details and figures are attributed to Netflix’s New Mexico production feature.
