How to Prevent Audio Gaps When Looping ASMR Videos in OBS

Enable Loop on an OBS Media Source, keep it loaded during testing, and compare the source file with an OBS recording to narrow down repeat-boundary gaps.

In OBS Studio, add the video as a Media Source, enable Loop, and leave Close file when inactive off while you test. This is the simplest baseline for repeating one local ASMR video, but OBS does not document a guarantee that the transition between the file’s end and beginning will be seamless. If a gap remains, compare the original file with an OBS recording before changing settings: the interruption may be in the media file, the source behavior, or the capture path.

Set up a simple looping test in OBS

  1. Add a Media Source: In the scene where the video should play, add a Media Source and select the local ASMR video file. OBS documents support for video types including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM, and audio types including MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV. Supported file types do not guarantee identical behavior for every codec or encoding variant. See the OBS Media Sources reference.
  2. Enable Loop: In the source properties, turn on Loop. OBS describes this setting as specifying whether the file plays again after playback completes.
  3. Keep the file loaded during the baseline test: Leave Close file when inactive disabled, and keep the source visible in the scene. OBS warns that when a file is closed while inactive, switching back to a scene that shows it may leave a short period where it is not showing while the file reloads. That behavior concerns reloading after inactivity; it does not establish the cause of a gap at every loop boundary.
  4. Record more than one repeat: Make an OBS recording long enough to capture the end of the file and its restart. Listen to that recording at the boundary rather than relying only on the preview or monitoring sound.

OBS settings and labels can vary by version. If a label is missing or behaves differently, note your OBS version, operating system, and source type before troubleshooting further.

Understand loop and activation settings separately

Loop controls what happens when playback reaches the end. Restart playback when source becomes active concerns what happens when the source becomes active; it is not documented as a seamless-loop control. Use the restart option only if you want playback to begin at the start when the source becomes active, such as after a scene change. It is not a demonstrated fix for an interruption at an ordinary repeat.

If the source is hidden or shown as scenes change, first test with it continuously visible. For a VLC Video Source, OBS provides a Visibility Behaviour control that affects what happens when the source is not visible. Community discussions have pointed users toward activation and visibility settings, but those are troubleshooting suggestions, not a guaranteed repair for loop gaps. See the OBS forum discussion about automatically playing media and the discussion about a source not restarting when active.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

When to try VLC Video Source

For a single local ASMR video, Media Source is a straightforward first choice. Consider VLC Video Source when you need a playlist or VLC-backed media support; it is not an established cure for a gap at a local file’s repeat point.

Consideration Media Source VLC Video Source
Best fit One local media file and a straightforward loop A playlist or a workflow needing VLC-backed media support
Repeat control Loop Loop Playlist
Activation or visibility controls Restart playback when source becomes active; Close file when inactive Visibility Behaviour
Dependency Built into OBS Requires VLC; OBS documentation says 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC
Additional documented controls An audio-track selector is not listed in the cited Media Source settings reference Audio Track selector and Network caching (ms)
Seamless-gap guarantee None found in the OBS reference None found in the OBS reference

These controls are documented in the OBS Media Sources reference. VLC’s Network caching (ms) control is documented, but the available evidence does not connect changing it to fixing a gap in a local-file loop. Do not change it on that assumption.

Diagnose where the interruption comes from

  1. Play the original file outside OBS. Listen closely to the end and beginning in a media player. Check whether the edit, room tone, or audio itself contains a pause or abrupt change.
  2. Listen to the OBS recording at the same boundary. Compare the captured transition with the original, rather than judging only from live monitoring or the preview.
  3. Check whether the gap follows visibility changes. If it happens after switching scenes or hiding and showing the source, test again with the source continuously visible. Then review the relevant activation or visibility behavior.
  4. Record the conditions. Note the OBS version, operating system, source type, file format, whether it happens at every repeat, and whether it happens only after a scene change. The cited OBS documentation covers Windows, macOS, and Linux, but does not establish platform-specific loop-gap behavior.

If the same discontinuity is audible in the original file and the OBS recording, investigate the file’s edit or encoded audio boundary. If it appears only in the OBS capture, investigate the source configuration and capture path. These comparisons help narrow the possibilities; they do not prove a cause by themselves.

Common symptoms and what to check

  • A brief blank or delay after returning to a scene: Check whether Close file when inactive is enabled. OBS says the source may take a short period to show again while it reloads. Leave the option off during testing.
  • Playback does not start from the beginning after a scene change: Review Restart playback when source becomes active for Media Source, or Visibility Behaviour for VLC Video Source. These settings concern activation or visibility, not a documented seamless boundary.
  • A pause at every repeat: Compare the source file and OBS recording at the same boundary, then test with the source continuously visible. No universal cause or guaranteed setting fix is established.
  • VLC Video Source is unavailable: Install VLC and match its architecture to OBS; OBS specifically notes that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
  • A VLC playlist does not repeat as expected: Check Loop Playlist and confirm the source is using the intended playlist. Do not assume a network-caching adjustment fixes a local-file transition.
  • You found reports of timing being slightly off: One community post describes a loop timing mismatch of less than a second, including with VLC. That is one person’s report, not a measured prevalence or evidence that all OBS loops behave this way. See the OBS forum thread about seamless-looping background music.

Keep an always-on YouTube stream running in the cloud

If the goal is a 24/7 YouTube channel playing uploaded ASMR videos, rather than local playback in OBS, StreamNeo runs the loop from the cloud so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos to YouTube; it does not go live from a camera.
