Here’s a worst-to-best ranking of the ten Friends episodes commonly grouped with Thanksgiving, judged by how central the holiday is to the plot, the strength of the comic set pieces, the ensemble dynamics, and the guest characters or subplots. The list includes one borderline entry: Season 2’s “The One With the List” has a Thanksgiving-related recipe story, but no Thanksgiving gathering.

How this ranking works

This is one considered order, not a definitive verdict. Vogue places “The One With the Football” first and “The One With All the Thanksgivings” last; Parade puts “The One With the Rumor” first and “The One With the List” last. Those different rankings show how much the order depends on whether you value holiday-centered plots, big comic moments, ensemble interplay, or a memorable guest character.

The ten-entry count comes from including one commonly grouped episode from each season. “The One With the List” is the exception to the usual idea of a Thanksgiving episode: its connection is Monica’s Mockolate recipe subplot, not a holiday meal. Vogue explicitly notes that it does not feature a Thanksgiving celebration, while TIME includes it in its list. [TIME; Vogue]

Friends Thanksgiving episodes, ranked worst to best

  1. 10. “The One With All the Thanksgivings” — Season 5, Episode 8

This flashback-heavy installment is packed with remembered holidays, including the famous turkey-on-the-head gag. Its place at the bottom reflects this ranking’s preference for episodes whose main action unfolds around Thanksgiving, rather than one built largely from past scenes. That is a matter of emphasis, not a claim that the episode lacks memorable moments: Parade ranks it second. PopCulture also uses the alternate title “The One With the Thanksgiving Flashbacks.” [Vogue; Parade; PopCulture]

  2. 9. “The One With the List” — Season 2, Episode 8

Monica develops Thanksgiving recipes using Mockolate, a synthetic chocolate substitute, but the episode does not show the friends celebrating Thanksgiving. It earns a place here as the season-two entry in a familiar ten-episode list, with the qualification that it is Thanksgiving-adjacent rather than a holiday gathering. Use Season 2, Episode 8: PopCulture gives a conflicting episode number. [Vogue; TIME; PopCulture]

  3. 8. “The One With the Late Thanksgiving” — Season 10, Episode 8

The final Thanksgiving installment gives Monica a familiar challenge: hosting the perfect dinner while her friends arrive late. That simple holiday conflict makes the episode’s premise clear, though the ranking’s top entries offer more distinctive ensemble set pieces. [Vogue]

  4. 7. “The One Where Chandler Doesn’t Like Dogs” — Season 7, Episode 8

A Thanksgiving meal becomes the backdrop for several comic threads: Phoebe hides a puppy, Chandler admits he does not like dogs, and Ross tries to name all 50 states before dinner. The episode has plenty happening at once, but its central holiday story is less defining than the football rivalry or family-confession chaos higher on this list. [Vogue; Parade]

  5. 6. “The One With the Rumor” — Season 8, Episode 9

Brad Pitt guest-stars as Will, an old school friend of Ross and Monica who arrives for Thanksgiving carrying a grudge against Rachel. The guest appearance gives the episode an immediate hook, while the rumor plot drives its holiday conflict. Its jokes about the rumor can feel dated, so this one may land differently for viewers revisiting it now. Parade ranks it first, underscoring how much the guest-star appeal can change a list. Rank #3
  6. 5. “The One Where Underdog Gets Away” — Season 1, Episode 9

The show’s first Thanksgiving episode turns a parade mishap into a group disaster. After the escaped Underdog balloon draws the friends to the roof, they return to find themselves locked out of Monica’s apartment. Grilled cheese and tomato soup replace the planned holiday dinner, giving the series’ Thanksgiving tradition a scrappy, character-driven beginning. [Vogue; Parade]

  7. 4. “The One With Rachel’s Other Sister” — Season 9, Episode 8

Christina Applegate plays Amy, Rachel’s sister, whose visit turns Thanksgiving into a family argument. Applegate’s performance is the episode’s main draw, and Amy’s clashes with the group make her more than a guest-star cameo. She gives this installment a different kind of holiday tension from the old-school grievance in “The One With the Rumor.” [Vogue; Parade]

  8. 3. “The One With Chandler in a Box” — Season 4, Episode 8

Joey makes Chandler spend Thanksgiving in a box as punishment for kissing Kathy, turning a friendship dispute into the episode’s central comic image. Meanwhile, Monica has an eye injury and invites the on-call doctor to dinner. The episode balances its high-concept punishment with a separate holiday storyline, giving the ensemble more than one source of comic tension. [Vogue; TIME]

  9. 2. “The One Where Ross Got High” — Season 6, Episode 9

Rachel’s English trifle goes disastrously wrong when beef ends up in the dessert, while Ross finally tells Monica’s parents that he was the one who smoked marijuana in college. The competing revelations make this one of the show’s most memorable Thanksgiving dinners: the food disaster supplies the visual gag, and Ross’s confession sends the family tension into overdrive. [Vogue; Parade]

  10. 1. “The One With the Football” — Season 3, Episode 9

The friends’ Thanksgiving football game brings the holiday action to the forefront, reviving the Geller Bowl rivalry between Monica and Ross. Sibling competition, shifting team alliances, and the coveted Geller Cup give the whole ensemble a shared comic engine rather than leaving Thanksgiving as background decoration. Vogue ranks it first, and TIME also singles out the annual Geller Cup rivalry. [Vogue; TIME]

Why rankings of the episodes differ

There is no single objective way to order these episodes. A list that prizes Thanksgiving as the main event will naturally favor the football game and the chaotic dinners. A list that gives greater weight to a guest star, a flashback gag, or an especially quotable subplot may move “The One With the Rumor” or “The One With All the Thanksgivings” higher. The season-two entry also changes the scope: include it, and the list has one commonly grouped episode per season; exclude it, and the list is limited to episodes that actually depict a Thanksgiving gathering.
