Professor Minerva McGonagall’s best lines move easily from dry comedy to fierce resolve. This curated selection draws on the books and films, and identifies the installment and medium for each quote; it is not an official or measured ranking. Wizarding World’s official lists show how her wit, fairness, loyalty and courage all shape her voice.

15 memorable Professor McGonagall quotes

  1. “Have a biscuit, Potter.”

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (book). McGonagall offers Harry a biscuit during a conversation about Umbridge. The small act of kindness lands with extra force because it comes from a teacher who is usually so controlled. Wizarding World identifies this as a book moment in its McGonagall quote roundup.

  2. “You each win Gryffindor five points.”

Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (book). After Harry and Ron help deal with the troll, McGonagall recognizes their actions by awarding house points. Her strictness does not prevent her from being fair. This line and scene are included in Wizarding World’s feature on her wit and wisdom.

  3. “He has achieved high marks in all Defence Against the Dark Arts tests set by a competent teacher.”

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (book). McGonagall challenges Umbridge’s efforts to undermine Harry, turning a formal assessment into a pointed defense of both Harry and the teachers who have taught him. The line appears in Wizarding World’s book-focused collection.

  4. “Hogwarts is threatened!”

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (book). As danger reaches the school, McGonagall’s words cut through the uncertainty and help rally its defenders. The official Wizarding World feature presents the line in its Battle of Hogwarts context.

  5. “I’ve always wanted to use that spell!”

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 (film). McGonagall’s delight at finally using a spell gives a flash of playful enthusiasm amid the battle. This is a film line, not a quotation attributed to the novel; Wizarding World labels it accordingly in its official list.

  6. “Why is it, when something happens, it is always you three?”

Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (film). Addressing Harry, Ron and Hermione, McGonagall sounds like a teacher who has already learned to expect trouble from the same small group. The line’s exasperation is part of its affection: she is reprimanding them, but she knows them well.

  7. “It unscrews the other way.”

Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (film). McGonagall gives Neville a brisk correction as he struggles with a door. A tiny instruction becomes a neat example of her practical, no-nonsense manner.

  8. “I should have made my meaning plainer. He is to be expelled.”

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (book). When Harry and Ron arrive at Hogwarts by flying car, McGonagall’s severity is unmistakable. The joke depends on how plainly she states the consequence: there is no softening the rules simply because the boys have returned.

  9. “It’s high time you learned some respect!”

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (film). McGonagall’s confrontation with Umbridge brings her resistance into the open. Her authority is not just about enforcing school rules; she is willing to use it to oppose an abuse of power.

  10. “I will not permit you to insult Albus Dumbledore.”

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (film). McGonagall draws a firm line when Dumbledore is attacked. The defense is personal, but it also reflects her loyalty to the school and to the people who serve it.

  11. “I’ve never seen a cat sit so stiffly.”

Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (film). Before the audience learns who she is, McGonagall’s cat form gives away her disciplined personality. The line is a playful nod to the posture and composure that define her even when she is not human.

  12. “I’m sure I could find you a detention.”

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (film). McGonagall’s dry warning to Umbridge is a reminder that her wit can be a weapon. She stays composed while making clear that she will not simply defer to an imposed authority.

  13. “We teachers are rather good at magic, you know.”

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (film). McGonagall’s understated confidence captures her command of magic without turning it into a boast. It is a concise reminder that Hogwarts’ staff are capable of defending themselves and their students.

  14. “It’s not a matter of what you want, Mr Potter. It’s what you need.”

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (film). McGonagall’s advice to Harry puts her care for him in the language of a demanding teacher. She respects him enough to be direct rather than simply tell him what he would prefer to hear.

  15. “I’ll do it.”

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 (film). McGonagall steps forward to protect Hogwarts as the battle approaches. The short declaration suits her: when the school needs action, she does not waste words.

What makes McGonagall’s lines distinctive

Her dialogue works because authority and feeling are not opposites. She can enforce rules, award points, correct a student or challenge an adult in power; she can also offer Harry a biscuit, defend colleagues and put herself between Hogwarts and danger. The voice stays recognizable across those different moments: composed, exact and quietly forceful.

That range fits the character described in Wizarding World’s official biography, which portrays Minerva as an outstanding student, a talented Transfiguration witch, an Animagus and a keen Quidditch player. Those details help explain her confidence and competence, but her most memorable lines also reveal a teacher who cares deeply about the people and school in her charge.

Book quotes and film lines are not interchangeable

Some McGonagall lines are tied to a particular adaptation. For instance, “I’ve always wanted to use that spell!” is identified by Wizarding World as a line from Deathly Hallows Part 2, the film. The book entries above are attributed separately to their novels. Wording and punctuation may differ between editions, subtitles and localizations, so the installment and medium matter when tracking down a line.
