Orton described marijuana use and anger outbursts in connection with his 2006 troubles; WWE later confirmed a separate 60-day suspension for a second policy violation in 2012 without saying what caused it. A later report, based on unnamed sources, said Orton helped influence WWE’s approach to marijuana—but Orton and WWE did not publicly confirm that account.
What Orton’s own account says about his 2006 troubles
In a September 2006 WWE Magazine interview, Orton described smoking marijuana backstage and acknowledged anger outbursts while on the road. Fightful reproduced the interview in 2021; its account is an accessible transcription, not the original magazine issue.
“My problems came to a head when I decided to smoke a joint and someone smelled it and stooged me off. You know who you are, so if you’re reading this, thanks. But I also had a few outbursts of anger on the road. I get loud and verbally abusive. But I’ve nipped that part of me in the bud.”
Orton also said he attended an anger-management clinic in Atlanta. Fightful reported his recollection that “It cost $15,000 for a four-week stay.” That figure is Orton’s account of his own treatment, not a standard cost for anger-management care. Fightful’s 2021 report also recounts him later discussing difficult personal circumstances during the suspension and getting help.

What WWE officially disclosed about his suspensions
WWE’s official notice says Orton received a 60-day suspension for a second violation of its Talent Wellness Program. It does not identify the conduct or substance behind that violation. The notice therefore supports the suspension, its length, and the “second violation” description—but not a claim that the 2012 violation involved marijuana. WWE’s announcement is the primary source for what it disclosed.
Orton’s 2006 suspension is a distinct episode, described by Orton in the interview reproduced by Fightful. It should not be conflated with WWE’s later notice about the second violation.

What WWE said its Wellness Program covered
In its corporate description, WWE said the Talent Wellness Program included cardiovascular testing and monitoring, ImPACT brain-function testing, annual physicals, medical referrals, blood screening, and random drug tests. WWE said the policy prohibited anabolic steroids and performance-enhancing drugs, masking agents, prescription-medication abuse, and illegal drugs, and that substance-abuse rehabilitation was available at no cost to current and former talent. These are WWE’s descriptions of its program, not an independent evaluation of its effectiveness. WWE’s program overview provides that account.
Did Orton help change WWE’s marijuana approach?
Fightful reported in April 2022 that unnamed sources described Orton as “an integral figure” in influencing a change in WWE’s approach to marijuana on the main roster. The report did not include a direct statement from Orton or confirmation from WWE, and it did not spell out his arguments. It is evidence of an anonymously sourced report about his influence, not proof of a public campaign or a detailed list of objections. Fightful’s report is the source for that claim.

Written marijuana penalties and reported enforcement
Accounts published in 2022 described a gap between policy wording and how the rule was reportedly enforced. Wrestling Headlines reproduced wording that specified a $2,500 fine for each positive marijuana test, while reporting wrestler accounts that fines had not been imposed for years. Fightful likewise reported wrestler accounts that fines were no longer being imposed, while at least one talent said testing continued. Those reports describe the situation at the time; they do not establish WWE’s current policy. Wrestling Headlines’ 2022 account contains the reproduced wording and reported enforcement context.
In May 2025, Fightful transcribed MVP’s recollection that WWE initially tested for steroids and hard drugs, later added cannabis with fines rather than suspensions, and raised the fine from $1,000 to $2,500. MVP also said he considered prepaying $12,000 for a year of monthly tests. These are MVP’s recollections, not official policy figures or a general account of what any individual talent paid. Fightful said at publication that weed was no longer on WWE’s banned-substance list; that report does not establish the exact policy text in October 2026. Fightful’s 2025 report records his account.

What the evidence does—and does not—show
- Established by Orton’s reported remarks: he connected his 2006 problems to marijuana use and road anger outbursts, and said he attended anger-management treatment.
- Established by WWE’s notice: it suspended him for 60 days for a second Talent Wellness Program violation, without disclosing the cause.
- Reported but not publicly confirmed by Orton or WWE: unnamed sources said Orton helped influence a later change in the marijuana approach.
- Historical, not a statement of current policy: the fine amounts and enforcement accounts come from reporting and wrestler recollections published in 2022 and 2025.
