Randy Orton and Cody Rhodes’ WWE relationship has shifted from mentor and associate to opponents. WWE describes their history as spanning 20 years, but the documented milestones show distinct chapters—not one uninterrupted feud.
Were Cody Rhodes and Randy Orton in Legacy together?
In their early WWE association, Rhodes was aligned with Orton alongside Ted DiBiase. WWE’s recap of WrestleMania XXVI describes Rhodes and DiBiase as Orton’s “former students,” establishing the mentor-and-associate framing in WWE’s own account. WWE’s WrestleMania XXVI recap
That wording supports describing Orton as the senior figure and Rhodes as a younger associate. It does not, by itself, establish every detail of their relationship or the full timeline of the faction.
How did Orton and Rhodes become opponents?
The WrestleMania XXVI recap records Orton defeating Rhodes and DiBiase in a Triple Threat Match. It is a clear point where the former-student relationship gives way to direct competition. The result marks a turning point in their story, but the recap is not a complete account of how the group broke apart or every event that followed. WrestleMania XXVI: Orton vs. Rhodes vs. DiBiase

What began their renewed rivalry?
In a later WWE event-page summary, the company connects a renewed conflict to Orton’s return and an RKO against Rhodes. The page says a match was then announced for Sunday Night’s Main Event. That establishes the announced storyline context on that page; it should not be read as confirmation of the match’s result or of developments after the announcement. Selected milestones—and what the record does not establish
| Chapter | What WWE’s cited material establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Early association | WWE’s WrestleMania XXVI recap calls Rhodes and DiBiase Orton’s former students. | A full timeline of the association or every faction storyline. |
| Break into competition | Orton defeated Rhodes and DiBiase in a Triple Threat Match at WrestleMania XXVI. | A complete account of the faction’s dissolution or all later matches. |
| Renewed conflict | A WWE event-page summary links Orton’s return and RKO against Rhodes to a match announcement. | The announced match’s final result or subsequent storyline developments. |
WWE has also published a retrospective video listing focused on the pair’s history since Rhodes’ 2022 return and an interview listing about their shared history. These are useful official viewing leads, but the listing descriptions alone do not verify a comprehensive chronology. The available cited material does not support a full match-by-match ledger, total match count, or head-to-head win-loss record.
