Ram Singh Charlie is a bittersweet drama about a Kolkata circus performer who loses his livelihood when the circus closes and takes up work as a rickshaw puller. Kumud Mishra gives the film its center as Ram Singh, a Charlie Chaplin impersonator whose setbacks do not extinguish his hope of starting a circus of his own. The performance is affecting; the screenplay is less consistent, with predictable turns and an ending critics found rushed.
What is Ram Singh Charlie about?
Ram Singh has built his life around performing as Charlie Chaplin in a circus. When the circus shuts down, he becomes a rickshaw puller in Kolkata, trying to support his family while holding on to a dream of reviving the circus. The premise links a personal struggle to the precarious work of performers whose skills can be treated as disposable once the show is over.

The Chaplin echo is more than a costume or impersonation: Ram Singh is a hopeful, vulnerable figure facing hardship with a mix of sadness and optimism. That contrast gives the film its emotional shape, even as its story sometimes leans heavily on familiar encouragement to keep following a dream.
How are the performances?
Kumud Mishra plays Ram Singh with a balance of weariness and hope that gives the character much of the film’s appeal. Nandini Ramnath, writing for Scroll, highlights Mishra’s ability to hold sadness and optimism together. Divya Dutta plays his wife, Kajri, and Rohit Rokhade plays their son, Chintu.
#1 Best Overall
The film’s concern extends beyond its central performance. It asks what becomes of circus workers when their workplace disappears, and how they are regarded by a society that may dismiss performers or turn them into objects of ridicule. Shubhra Gupta’s review for The Indian Express describes the film’s gentle optimism and its attention to that precariousness.
Where does the film falter?
The compassion in the premise does not always carry through to the plotting. Ramnath finds the screenplay uneven at points and the ending rushed. Gupta notes predictable turns and repeated emphasis on following one’s dreams. Those choices can make the film’s message feel more insistent than its character drama needs.
The critical responses are individual assessments, not a single consensus verdict. Filmfare calls it a sensitive film about circus workers and a homage to Charlie Chaplin, rating it 3.5 out of 5. The Times of India rates it 3 out of 5 and says the script could have been tighter.

It is most likely to work for viewers drawn to character-led dramas about work, family and resilience, especially those interested in Mishra’s performance or the film’s Chaplin connection. Its strongest element is the tenderness with which it regards a performer trying to rebuild his life. Viewers looking for tightly paced plotting may be less persuaded by its familiar turns and hurried finish.
