In a September 19, 2019 interview with GQ India, The Family Man creators Raj Nidimoru and Krishna DK explained how they built the Amazon Prime Video series around a government employee balancing intelligence work with money worries and family responsibilities. Their Srikant Tiwari is skilled at his job, but neither glamorous nor flawless: he is a husband and father whose personal life is part of the story, not a pause between spy missions.
Why Raj and DK chose a series instead of a film
Raj said the idea needed more room than a feature film could provide. The creators wanted to combine a geopolitical setting with the everyday pressures of a middle-class family. As he put it, “We wanted to do a series with a backdrop of geopolitics, with a character at the centre who’s a middle-class government employee, and has financial constraints and a family to take care of.”

The premise makes Srikant’s two lives inseparable. He works to protect the country from terror threats, but he also has to manage limited money and obligations at home. The series’ tension comes from those demands colliding rather than from spy work alone.
What makes Srikant different from a conventional spy
Raj described the character as a world-class operative without the polished glamour or gadgets associated with a familiar spy-hero image. He placed Srikant in ordinary Mumbai routines: “This world-class spy lives in Chembur, drives a beat up car, travels by local trains and eats vada pav.”

That contrast is central to the creators’ conception: Srikant can be highly capable in the field and still be constrained by finances, time and family life. Raj said they wanted an imperfect protagonist who makes mistakes and struggles to give his family enough attention—not an ideal husband or father whose competence at work makes him admirable in every part of life.
How the creators researched the character and story
Raj and DK said they spoke with retired intelligence and police officers and reviewed cases made available to them. Raj stressed that the series was not an adaptation of one specific real-life case. Instead, the research helped the creators make their fictional story feel authentic.

Raj was especially interested in what officers were like away from work and what their families experienced. That emphasis helps explain why the series puts domestic relationships beside professional procedures: the character’s off-duty life was part of the research question, not an incidental subplot.
Why Manoj Bajpayee was right for Srikant
Krishna said Bajpayee could make Srikant recognizable as a common man while also bringing surprise and morally complex shades to the role. Raj’s account of the character complements that casting choice: Srikant is effective at his job, but his mistakes and strained family responsibilities keep him from becoming an uncomplicated hero.

In a November 29, 2019 Amazon press release, Bajpayee described Srikant as “the flawed but extremely relatable” character and said the response to his performance had been overwhelming. That release also said the first season had become Amazon’s “most watched Amazon Original Series in India” by that date. Amazon did not provide an audience count in the release, so the statement is a company-reported, time-specific claim rather than a current ranking or a numerical viewership figure.
What the creators said about Islamophobia and OTT censorship
The interview addressed whether the series could be criticized as Islamophobic and whether the creators were concerned about OTT censorship. Krishna said Islamophobia was not in the show, and that the creators aimed to serve the story rather than use platform freedom gratuitously. Those remarks report the creators’ stated position; they are not an independent assessment of the series or of how audiences have responded.

Where the series stands now
The GQ India conversation is from September 2019, before the series’ later seasons. Amazon’s official season 3 article says the season became available on Prime Video on November 21, 2025, and describes Srikant facing new adversaries played by Jaideep Ahlawat and Nimrat Kaur. Amazon also says seasons 1 and 2 are exclusively available on Prime Video. Streaming availability can change; these details reflect what Amazon’s article states.
