Rahasya (2015) Review: An Absorbing, Stylish Christie-Style Whodunit

Manish Gupta’s Rahasya pairs a Christie-style murder puzzle with atmospheric craft and brisk suspense, though its smooth reveal asks for a leap of faith.

Rahasya is a 2015 Hindi murder mystery built around a doctor accused of killing his daughter and a CBI investigator who works through a circle of suspects. In Nandini Ramnath’s Scroll.in review, published January 30, 2015, its chief appeal is the familiar pleasure of an Agatha Christie-style puzzle, delivered with taut pacing and striking atmosphere. Its ending, however, asks viewers to accept a notably smooth chain of events.

What is Rahasya about?

Written and directed by Manish Gupta, Rahasya follows a murder investigation after a doctor is accused of killing his daughter. Kay Kay Menon plays CBI investigator Sunil Paraskar, who questions people connected to the case and gradually narrows the field of possible killers. Ashish Vidyarthi and Tisca Chopra play the doctor, Sachin Mahajan, and his wife, Aarti Mahajan.

The film’s basic engine is deduction: a bounded group of implicated characters, clues and changing suspicions, leading toward a final explanation. Rotten Tomatoes’ listing for Rahasya identifies it as a Hindi mystery and corroborates its premise, director and principal cast.

Is Rahasya an Agatha Christie-style whodunit?

That is the most useful way to understand the film’s structure, rather than a claim that it adapts a particular Christie story. Ramnath describes a familiar whodunit pattern: the investigator moves through a suspect circle, gathers evidence and brings the characters together for a climactic reveal. The pleasure lies less in reinvention than in watching suspicion shift as Paraskar pursues the answer.

#1 Best Overall

Ramnath’s verdict is that the film is “far from being an exploitative flick ‒ rather, it’s a taut and stylish affair, which gives no quarter to extraneous elements such as songs and sub-plots over its 125 minutes.” The review’s point is that the streamlined approach keeps attention on the investigation instead of diverting into unrelated storylines.

How well does the film work?

Suspense and atmosphere

Scroll’s strongest praise is for the film’s pace and mood. Faroukh Mistry’s cinematography gives the investigation an atmospheric visual texture, while the Mumbai locations help ground its world. Suresh Pai’s editing supports the forward motion of the mystery, and Ranjit Barot’s background score reinforces its tension. A favorable Reuters excerpt displayed on Rotten Tomatoes likewise characterizes the film as taut and atmospheric.

Performances and the reveal

The review is less convinced by every performance, describing some acting as broad. A Times of India excerpt on Rotten Tomatoes also suggests that the film relies heavily on Menon’s detective performance. The more substantial reservation is the denouement: its explanation comes together too smoothly, and its plausibility depends on viewers granting the story considerable leeway.

Is Rahasya based on a true story?

It should not be presented as a factual account of the Aarushi Talwar case. Ramnath reports that the film was initially publicized as a dramatization of the 2008 double murder of Aarushi Talwar and Hemraj, and that the Talwars objected to similarities and attempted legal action. But the review argues that the apparent parallels recede as the plot develops into a conventional fictional whodunit. That is the reviewer’s framing; the characters and events in the film should not be treated as direct equivalents of real people or as a reliable account of the case.

Who should watch it?

Rahasya is a fit for viewers who enjoy investigator-led mysteries, a compact suspect list and a final explanation, and who value mood and pacing over strict realism. Those who need every plot turn to feel fully plausible may find the ending less satisfying. The film’s strengths are chiefly in its suspenseful construction and technical atmosphere, not in an especially novel premise or uniformly restrained acting.

Where can you watch Rahasya?

Rotten Tomatoes records a streaming date of March 1, 2018, and displays rental or purchase language for Prime Video. Those are historical listing details, not confirmation that the film is currently available where you live. Check the services and stores in your country for current options.
