Off Radio Krakow’s 2024 experiment with AI-generated presenters collapsed after public backlash over replacing human hosts and broadcasting a fabricated “interview” with the late Polish poet Wisława Szymborska. Futurism reported that the station cancelled the AI-hosted program after the controversy.
What Off Radio Krakow did
The Polish station introduced three AI-generated presenters for an experimental program aimed at attracting younger listeners. This was a limited program experiment, not evidence that every station employee or the entire station had been replaced.
The most controversial segment presented a conversation with Wisława Szymborska, who died in 2012. Both the interviewer and the apparent interviewee were AI-generated. It should therefore be described as synthetic content about Szymborska—not an authentic interview and not a genuine statement from her.
Why the experiment triggered backlash
Human presenters were removed
Critics objected to using AI avatars in place of human hosts. A fired former host, Łukasz Zaleski, told Futurism that “real, deep talks and real interviews with real people were replaced with something totally fake.” The dispute was consequently about labor and editorial judgment as well as technology.

A deceased person was made to appear in a new conversation
Generating a dialogue involving a dead poet created a sharper authenticity problem. Listeners could reasonably mistake a polished, radio-style exchange for recovered testimony unless the synthetic nature and lack of consent were made unmistakably clear. The available accounts describe the segment as AI-generated; they do not establish a legal finding that the station violated a specific law.
Disclosure and trust were central
Even supporters of AI development questioned the boundary between an openly labeled fictional reconstruction and content presented in the format of journalism. Poland’s digitalization minister, Krzysztof Gawkowski, was quoted by Futurism saying that, although he supports AI development, “certain boundaries are being crossed more and more.”

What happened, in sequence
- Experimental launch in 2024: Off Radio Krakow put three AI presenters on a program designed to reach younger listeners.
- Synthetic Szymborska segment: The program aired an AI-generated interview involving the deceased poet.
- Public and professional criticism: Objections focused on the displacement of human hosts and the fabricated conversation.

What is known about the audience response
Futurism said listenership increased from “close to zero” to 8,000 at first. That is an 8,000-initial-listener figure reported by Futurism in 2024, not independently verified station analytics: the available account gives no measurement method, time window, or definition of a listener. It should not be treated as proof that the format achieved durable success.
How the station described the fallout
Radio Krakow editor-in-chief Mariusz Marcin Pulit rejected the portrayal of the project as a plan to eliminate people, saying, “I have been turned into a job-killing monster who wants to replace real people with avatars.” After the cancellation, he said, “We are pioneers, and the fate of pioneers can be difficult.” Those comments show how the station framed the project, but they do not remove the central criticism that actual presenters lost their roles.

Why this case matters for AI in broadcasting
The incident illustrates several risks that apply to any synthetic-media pilot:
- Worker displacement: Replacing identifiable hosts can make an audience view the technology as a labor-cutting tool, regardless of the stated creative objective.
- Identity and consent: A generated voice or persona associated with a real, especially deceased, person can imply endorsement that never occurred.
- Editorial labeling: “AI-generated” needs to be prominent enough that listeners understand what they are hearing before treating it as reporting or testimony.
- Measurement: A single early audience number cannot establish retention, trust, or financial performance when methodology is undisclosed.
- Reversibility: A pilot should have a clear shutdown plan when public trust deteriorates.

- Does any real person’s identity, voice, writing style, or likeness appear, and what permission supports that use?
- Can the station publish how audience figures are measured rather than citing an unexplained total?
- Who can pause or terminate the experiment when trust, accuracy, or consent concerns arise?
Off Radio Krakow’s experience suggests that novelty and an initial spike in attention cannot compensate for unclear consent, weak disclosure, or the perception that people are being replaced by machines.
