Radio Garden lets you spin a digital globe, tap a green dot and hear a live internet-radio station associated with that city or town. It is free to use with advertising, and its appeal is the unexpected journey: the next broadcast might be music, local news, talk or a language you do not recognize.
What is Radio Garden?
Radio Garden is a live-radio directory built around a rotating globe. Green dots mark cities and towns with streams in its directory; tap a dot to see available broadcasters and choose one. A dot represents a place, not necessarily a single station. The service is available on the web at Radio Garden, as well as through official iPhone and iPad and Android apps.
This is internet streaming, not reception from a phone’s FM or AM tuner. The directory associates broadcasters with places, but a marker does not guarantee that a station is physically transmitting there in the over-the-air sense, or that every feed will work from every country or network.

“Addictive” is a playful description of the experience, not a medical claim. The globe makes wandering the point: instead of choosing a station name or genre first, you choose a place and discover what is on air. That low-friction choice, paired with live broadcasts that change through the day, gives each tap a small element of surprise.

- Place comes first: the map makes a broadcast feel connected to a city, even when you have never visited it.
- There is no need to know what to search for: browse into a new region and sample its stations.
- Live radio is unpredictable: you may hear music, weather, advertisements, interviews or local announcements rather than a curated playlist.
- Exploration can become its own goal: compare cities, time zones and languages, or revisit a place you know.
That makes Radio Garden a different kind of discovery tool from a recommendation feed that tries to predict your existing tastes. It is especially satisfying when you are curious about how a place sounds right now.
How to find and save a station
- Open radio.garden or install the official app from the App Store or Google Play.
- Wait for the globe and station markers to load, then drag or zoom to explore.
- Tap a green dot over a city or town to see the streams listed for that location.
- Choose a station and use the player controls to pause, resume or switch broadcasts.
- Save a station to Favorites if that option is available in your app. The Android listing describes saving favorite stations; the iOS listing has described search for stations, places and countries. Labels and interface details can change between versions.
For easier discovery, start somewhere familiar and move outward one country at a time. Try a city at different times of day: programming changes because these are live feeds, not fixed playlists. Search can be quicker than panning across the globe when you already have a place in mind. Both mobile listings say playback can continue when the phone sleeps, which is useful for background listening.
Is Radio Garden free?
The apps are free to download, and the listings present basic listening as free with advertising and in-app purchases. The iOS listing describes a Premium option that removes visual advertising and includes a Sleep Timer. That does not necessarily remove advertisements or sponsorships carried inside a station’s live audio; app advertising and broadcaster advertising are separate.

The U.S. App Store listing displayed Premium purchase options of $2.99 and $24.99 on August 18, 2026, but it does not clearly establish the billing interval for each. Check the purchase screen in your own store and region for the current price, billing terms and benefits before subscribing.
What can you hear, and how large is the directory?
The directory spans music, news and talk, sports and cultural programming, student and community radio, religious broadcasts and stations in languages you may not understand. Because streams are live, content and sound quality vary by station; commercials and local announcements are part of the experience.
Recent coverage described the catalog as having more than 40,000 stations, but that is a time-sensitive estimate, not a guaranteed count for every user. Entries can be added, removed or repaired, and the number of usable streams at a particular location may be smaller than the map suggests. BGR’s coverage reported the figure.

What to expect when a stream fails
A station may appear in the directory but be silent, unavailable or unreliable. Its broadcaster may have taken the feed offline or changed its stream address; the stream may also be overloaded, geo-restricted, blocked by a network or affected by a weak connection. The Android listing says Radio Garden adds stations and updates streams that no longer work, but that cannot prevent every individual failure.
- Try a different station in the same place.
- Close and reopen the stream, then test the web version if you are using the app.
- Switch between Wi-Fi and cellular data to check whether the network is the problem.
- Try again later. If a specific station is important, check the broadcaster’s official website for its own player or a current stream.
Some listeners have reported problems with Favorites. The iOS listing includes a developer response suggesting browser bookmarks as a workaround when listening on the web; this is a reported issue, not evidence of a universal current defect. For stations you do not want to lose, keep a personal list of names and cities or bookmark their pages, and do not assume favorites sync across every platform.
Data, privacy and content considerations
Live audio uses mobile data continuously. Consumption varies with the station’s bitrate and stream format, so there is no single reliable data-per-hour figure for the whole directory. Use Wi-Fi for extended listening and check your phone’s data-usage settings if you are on a limited plan.

Store disclosures indicate that data practices vary by platform. Apple’s listing identifies categories that may include coarse location, identifiers, usage and advertising data, diagnostics and performance information; Google Play separately describes collection or sharing that may include app activity, app information and performance, and device IDs. These are developer-provided disclosures, not independent audits, and can change. Review the current listing and your location permissions before enabling features that use location.
Live stations can include unfamiliar political or religious speech, profanity or adult themes. The iOS listing carries a 13+ rating and flags possible mature or suggestive themes, alcohol, tobacco, drug references and infrequent profanity or crude humor. Radio Garden should not be treated as a dependable emergency-information channel: an internet stream can be delayed, interrupted, restricted or unavailable. Use official local alerts and emergency-management sources for urgent information.

Radio Garden suits listeners who enjoy serendipity, international broadcasts, language exposure, local voices or ambient background audio. It is less suitable if you need a specific show on demand, guaranteed access to one station, podcasts, offline listening or radio during an internet outage. For those needs, start with the broadcaster’s own app or website, a directory built around known stations, or a terrestrial radio where internet is unavailable.

These are alternatives to compare by the job you need done, not a claim that one is universally better. The relevant app-store listings include several of these services among similar apps, but their current prices and feature limits are not established here.
For Radio Garden, the globe is both the attraction and the compromise. It turns location into a playful way to encounter live radio, but it is not the fastest route to a particular song, show or reliably available station. If you like exploring without knowing what you will hear next, that trade-off is the point.
