R.J. Decker earns attention less by reinventing the procedural than by giving it an unusually specific flavor: a disgraced newspaper photographer turned private investigator, strange South Florida cases, and a supporting cast tied together by history and consequence. It is a distinctive, quirk-friendly crime drama, though “standout” is a judgment about its particular mix—not a claim of universal acclaim.
What is R.J. Decker about?
ABC’s series follows R.J. Decker, a disgraced newspaper photographer and ex-con who starts over as a private investigator in South Florida. His cases range from slightly odd to outright bizarre. He works with journalist and ex-partner Emilia “Emi” Ochoa, Emi’s wife, Detective Melody “Mel” Abreu, his former cellmate Aloysius “Wish” Aiken, and Catherine Delacroix, a woman from his past whose help may come with risks.
The show is written and run by Rob Doherty, produced by 20th Television, and inspired by Carl Hiaasen’s novel Double Whammy. ABC describes it as a new chapter for a man trying to rebuild his life while investigating crime in a setting where the cases can be as unpredictable as the people around him. ABC’s series guide lists Scott Speedman as R.J., Jaina Lee Ortiz as Emi, Bevin Bru as Mel, Kevin Rankin as Wish, and Adelaide Clemens as Catherine.
What makes it different from other procedurals?
South Florida is part of the appeal
The location gives the show a sense of place that matters to its identity. Rather than using Florida as interchangeable scenery, the series leans into the region’s eccentric possibilities and lets its unusual crimes shape the tone. That setting, paired with dark humor, helps the show feel less like a standard case-of-the-week drama.

The cases are strange, but the people keep the story grounded
The procedural engine provides individual mysteries, while R.J.’s past and the relationships around him create continuity. Disney’s Season 2 overview describes R.J. and Mel taking on chaotic Florida cases as R.J. and Emi deal with the fallout from Victor’s murder. The result is a blend of episodic investigation and longer-running personal and criminal consequences.
The tone favors quirks over grit
Reviews have pointed to the series’ light, quirk-friendly sensibility, ensemble chemistry, and Speedman’s charismatic lead performance. That makes it a useful comparison point for viewers of character-led procedurals such as Will Trent or High Potential, but not a substitute for either: its strongest distinction is the combination of South Florida, oddball offenses, and a continuing web of relationships.

Is the new ABC crime procedural worth the watch?
If you want a procedural with a more playful edge and a setting that contributes to the cases, R.J. Decker has a clear reason to stand out. Its premise gives the investigators room for both mystery-solving and character friction, and the eccentric crimes offer a change of pace from more conventional police dramas. Viewers seeking a consistently hard-edged or realistic crime series may find the comic, offbeat approach less appealing.
The critical case for its distinctiveness is specific rather than universal. In a review roundup, CinemaBlend relayed Variety critic Aramide Tinubu’s view that “The cases themselves may be a bit bewildering, but the distinctiveness of the offenses showcased here does set RJ Decker apart from its contemporaries.” That is one critic’s assessment, not evidence of a consensus or a measurable ranking. CinemaBlend’s roundup also reflects the premiere’s emphasis on setting, humor, and the lead performance.

Where can you watch R.J. Decker Season 2?
As of October 4, 2026, Season 2 has premiered in the United States. Disney dates the premiere to September 15, 2026, and says new episodes air Tuesdays at 10 p.m. ET/PT on ABC, then stream Wednesdays on Hulu. Hulu is also available through Disney+ for eligible bundle subscribers. ABC’s episode listing dates the first three episodes to September 16, 23, and 30; ABC press materials list “The Angler” for October 6. Yes. ABC says the series is inspired by Carl Hiaasen’s novel Double Whammy. “Inspired by” is the established relationship; the official descriptions do not characterize the show as a scene-by-scene adaptation. Readers who want the source novel can look for Double Whammy by Carl Hiaasen.
