Qurban is the Eid al-Adha animal sacrifice performed as an act of worship and devotion to God. Its legal status, eligible animals, slaughter window and meat-distribution rules vary among religious authorities, so practical guidance should be attributed to the school or local authority a person follows.
What does Qurban mean?
Qurban—also called kurban, Qurbani or udhiyah in different settings—is the sacrifice of an eligible animal as an act of worship associated with Eid al-Adha. The term expresses drawing near to God. Malaysia’s Department of Islamic Development, JAKIM, describes it as a strongly urged practice whose purpose is to draw closer to Allah; that is JAKIM’s framing, not a ruling that should automatically be applied across all traditions. JAKIM’s Qurban guideline and the South Sulawesi Indonesian Ulema Council’s explanation place it on Eid al-Adha and the days of Tashriq.
Is Qurban obligatory or recommended?
There is no single answer across the authorities covered here. JAKIM calls Qurban sunat muakkadah, a strongly emphasized sunnah, and says leaving it is discouraged for those able to afford it. Türkiye’s Directorate of Religious Affairs (Diyanet) describes sacrifice as binding for Muslims who meet its stated conditions, including being of sound mind and mature, having sufficient wealth beyond basic needs and debts, and being resident rather than travelling. The office of Grand Ayatollah Sistani describes the Eid sacrifice as an emphasized recommended act for those able to afford it. Follow the ruling of the qualified authority or school relevant to you rather than treating one position as universal. Diyanet’s explanation of who is obliged and Sistani’s Q&A on udhiyah set out their respective positions.
Which animals qualify, and what age must they be?
Eligible species and minimum ages are not stated identically in all guidance. The examples below belong to the named sources and are not a substitute for checking the rules followed in your community.

| Authority | Animals and ages stated |
|---|---|
| MUI South Sulawesi (2022) | Camels: five years; cattle: two years; goats: two years; rams or sheep: one year, or after loss of milk teeth. The article also notes a six-month qualification for sheep. |
| Sistani’s office | Camels: five years; cows and goats: two years; sheep: seven months. The answer presents these as minimum-age precautions. |
Animal condition and eligibility can also be subject to detailed rules. Confirm the applicable ages and requirements with the religious authority you follow before arranging a sacrifice.
When can the sacrifice be performed?
The cited guidance generally connects Qurban with Eid al-Adha and the days of Tashriq, but the precise window differs. JAKIM and MUI South Sulawesi describe the observance as falling on Eid al-Adha (10 Dhu al-Hijjah) and the three Tashriq days (11–13 Dhu al-Hijjah). Diyanet says the period begins after the Eid prayer and ends at sunset on the third day of Eid; it notes that the Shafi‘i school permits sacrifice until sunset on the fourth day. Sistani’s guidance distinguishes location: four days for those in Mina and three days elsewhere, with a recommended precaution favoring earlier performance. Diyanet’s timing guidance explains its dates and school-specific note.

Because Dhu al-Hijjah follows the lunar calendar, the Gregorian date and local prayer time depend on the year and location. Check the dates and operational schedule announced by a trusted local authority or organizer; do not rely on a fixed Gregorian date without that verification.
Can an organization perform Qurban on your behalf?
Delegation can be arranged, but consent and the scope of authority matter. Diyanet says the owner must authorize the agent, and the animal should be sacrificed with the owner’s intention. Where an organization acts as intermediary, its authorization should cover the agreed tasks—such as purchase, sacrifice and distribution—and it should not go beyond the consent given. JAKIM also recognizes agency-managed arrangements, including online services, while emphasizing attention to religious requirements and the organizer’s responsibility to act as a trustee rather than prioritize profit alone. Questions to settle before authorizing a service
- What exactly are you authorizing: purchase, sacrifice, distribution, or all three?
- How will the organizer confirm that the sacrifice takes place within the applicable time window?
- Where will the meat be distributed, and what distribution approach does the service follow?
- Are fees clearly disclosed and kept separate from the animal’s meat, hide and offal? Diyanet says operational fees should be paid separately rather than taken from those byproducts.
How should Qurban meat be distributed?
Distribution instructions vary, so a thirds formula should not be presented as universally binding. Sistani says it is permissible to keep a third for oneself or one’s family and to give another third as a gift; as a recommended precaution, the remaining third should be given to poor Muslims. Jordan’s General Iftaa Department states that a portion of voluntary-sacrifice meat should go to the poor and recommends dividing it into thirds: one-third for the household, one-third for poor people and one-third as gifts to friends and neighbors, including those who are wealthy. That is the Department’s ruling dated 30 March 2026, not a universal consensus. Sistani’s udhiyah Q&A and Jordan’s General Iftaa Department ruling state their respective guidance.

Diyanet’s practical guidance calls for preventing harm to the animal and workers, keeping the environment clean, and avoiding sharpening a knife in the animal’s sight or slaughtering where other animals can see it. These are practical measures in Diyanet’s guidance; follow applicable local rules and the qualified guidance governing the rite. Diyanet’s advice on matters to observe during sacrifice provides further detail.

- Check the local Eid prayer time and the applicable slaughter deadline before booking or arranging the sacrifice.
- If appointing an organization, give clear consent for the tasks it will perform and ask how it will handle timing, distribution and separately charged fees.
- Use that same authority’s guidance for distributing the meat, rather than assuming one allocation rule applies everywhere.
