The epilogue of Queer draws on an episode from William S. Burroughs’s life, but screenwriter Justin Kuritzkes says the film was not intended as a Burroughs biopic. The filmmakers aimed to stay faithful to William Lee as a character while finding a way to acknowledge how closely the unfinished novella is bound up with Burroughs’s account of his wife Joan Vollmer’s death. The film’s final act is an imaginative extension of the book, not a recovered ending from Burroughs’s manuscript.
Why does the epilogue reference Burroughs’s real life?
The glass-on-the-head shooting image recalls the 1951 shooting of Joan Vollmer by Burroughs in Mexico City. In an interview with GQ, Kuritzkes said the filmmakers recognized that the novella’s boundary with Burroughs’s life and work could feel indistinct. He noted that Burroughs’s discussion of Vollmer’s death appeared in editions of the book and felt fundamental to its construction, so the filmmakers sought a way to incorporate that connection.
Kuritzkes also said Lewis Marker, the real-life figure on whom Eugene Allerton was based, was present at the party where Vollmer was shot. TIME likewise connects the film’s William Tell scene to the historical shooting in its ending analysis. The scene therefore carries a biographical echo, but that does not make it a literal reenactment.
Is William Lee meant to be William S. Burroughs?
No: Kuritzkes draws a distinction between the character and the author. He said, “we weren’t interested in making the William S. Burroughs biopic” in the GQ interview. The aim, he explained, was fidelity to Lee rather than to Burroughs “the man.” That distinction matters when reading the gun scene: its imagery invokes history, but Lee should not simply be treated as Burroughs or as a stand-in whose actions establish the real author’s motives.

Interpretations of Lee’s smile or what the moment means emotionally remain interpretations. TIME offers a reading of the expression, but the creators’ explanation does not establish that Lee’s reaction is a statement about Burroughs’s motives or feelings.
How does the film’s ending relate to the unfinished novella?
Director Luca Guadagnino says Burroughs’s source novella is unfinished. Rather than claim to restore a missing ending, he and Kuritzkes created a third act in the spirit of the book, asking what might happen if Lee and Allerton actually obtained the yagé they seek.

Guadagnino described the task this way in QX Magazine: “The writer Justin Kuritzkes and I needed to find a way to create a third act in the spirit of Burroughs”. The film’s epilogue is thus a deliberate continuation of the story, shaped by the novella and its biographical context, rather than a scene drawn from a completed final section by Burroughs.

What the ending asks viewers to keep separate
- The historical echo: the glass-on-the-head image recalls Burroughs’s shooting of Vollmer.
- The fictional story: Lee remains a character, and Kuritzkes says the filmmakers sought fidelity to him rather than a biopic of Burroughs.
- The adaptation choice: Guadagnino and Kuritzkes devised a new third act because the novella is unfinished.
- Interpretation versus intent: a viewer may read Lee’s expression or the scene’s meaning in a particular way, but that reading is not established as the filmmakers’ statement about Burroughs’s motives.
