Queen Camilla says she and King Charles sit down to read quietly before dinner. The habit is one of the personal details she shares in The Book That Changed My Life, a BBC documentary about four people whose lives were changed by books. The Royal Family announced that the film is expected on BBC Two and BBC iPlayer on 14 October 2026, subject to confirmation in the weekly television schedules.
What Camilla says about reading with King Charles
In coverage of the documentary, Camilla described a calm before-dinner routine: “My husband and I actually read before dinner, we just like sitting quietly and reading.” The account is her recollection, reported by The Independent and Reuters, rather than an independently observed account of the couple’s household routine.
The quiet does not always last. Camilla said Charles sometimes laughs aloud at what he is reading, while she can find herself weeping over her own book. Reuters reports that Charles enjoys biographies and the comic writing of P. G. Wodehouse; Camilla’s stated preferences include historical fiction and thrillers.
What the BBC documentary is about
The Book That Changed My Life follows four people whose lives, according to the film’s official description, were changed by books at moments when they most needed them. The Royal Family’s announcement says Camilla meets the participants and explores how reading affected their lives. It frames the film as part of the UK’s National Year of Reading 2026 and the work of the Queen’s Reading Room.

The announcement does not name the four participants. The Independent describes them as an HGV driver, a former prisoner, a roadside café owner and a man who experienced depression after an incident at home. BBC coverage discusses experiences involving prison, adult literacy, bereavement, social isolation and a book group. These are individual stories in a documentary, not evidence that books are a substitute for clinical care.
Books and reading memories mentioned in coverage
Camilla has linked reading with learning about other people and life. Reuters reports her saying, “I left school quite young, so reading has been most of my education,” and, “You learn so much about people, about life.” BBC coverage also recalls her saying she read Lady Chatterley’s Lover as a teenager and was captivated by Charles Dickens’s A Tale of Two Cities.

Other books appear in reports through the documentary’s participants and family stories. BBC coverage connects Bruce Shand’s memoir, Previous Engagements, with his wartime experience and his use of books while imprisoned; it also mentions The Eagle Has Landed and Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone in accounts from contributors. These mentions do not amount to an official royal reading list or a set of recommendations.
When is The Book That Changed My Life on?
The Royal Family’s announcement, published on 6 October 2026, says the documentary is expected to air on BBC Two and BBC iPlayer on 14 October 2026, subject to confirmation in the weekly television schedules. The date remains provisional until the BBC’s final listing confirms it. Check the BBC schedule or iPlayer listing near transmission for the current information.

The Queen’s Reading Room and the film’s wider context
The Queen’s Reading Room is the organization associated with Camilla’s reading advocacy. Its 2026 announcement says its online book club reaches audiences in more than 180 countries and that one in two UK adults reads a book each year. Those figures are claims made by the organization; the announcement does not provide underlying methodology for the adult-reading figure.
The same announcement describes a 2024 neuroscience study as finding that five minutes of fiction reading was associated with almost 20% lower stress, as well as improved concentration and social connection. That is the charity’s characterization of its study, not an independently assessed result here. The film’s central point is more personal: it presents reading as meaningful in the lives of the people who tell their stories.
