Johnnie Be Good is a feature documentary directed by Art Holliday about pianist Johnnie Johnson, his musical legacy, and his complicated creative relationship with Chuck Berry. The film is still in the finishing stage: the project describes a 95-minute rough cut, while its producing partner expects a release as early as mid-to-late 2028. That is a forecast, not a confirmed date, and no distributor or viewing platform has been announced in the available sources.
Who was Johnnie Johnson, and what is the film about?
Johnnie Johnson was a pianist associated with the early history of rock and roll and a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Johnnie Be Good presents his life, music, military service, and legacy, with particular attention to his musical partnership with Chuck Berry. The project’s account says Johnson hired Berry to join his band in 1952.
The film’s central question is how to understand Johnson’s creative contribution to the music made with Berry, including the question of songwriting credit. Its official project page argues that Johnson was an underrecognized contributor. That is the filmmakers’ framing of a disputed historical question, not a settled conclusion established by the documentary’s current production status.
What is the documentary’s production and release status?
The official project website describes the available version as a 95-minute rough cut, not a finished film with a confirmed final runtime. It says work remains on finishing funds, final edits, fair-use assessment, and licensing. STORYSMART says it partnered with Holliday in 2026 as executive producer and finish-line producing partner, supporting completion, audience development, and release.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What has the director said about Johnson’s legacy?
The project page attributes this view to Holliday: “Johnnie Johnson helped create the soundtrack of rock and roll.” It is the director’s perspective on Johnson’s importance. The same page reproduces a sentence attributed to Rolling Stone writer David Fricke: “Johnson went on to become the greatest sideman in rock & roll, at the very moment the music was being born.” That quotation is presented here as reproduced by the project site; the underlying Rolling Stone article has not been independently verified here.
