Colbert paused the exchange and said he would return to the Israel-Palestine issue after a commercial break. When the interview resumed, Pelosi defended Israel’s right to defend itself and called for a two-state solution; continued shouting brought the interview to an end.
When and where the interruption happened
The interruption took place during the second night of the 2024 Democratic National Convention, when The Late Show was broadcasting live from Chicago. A protester shouted while Pelosi, the former House Speaker, was being interviewed. Contemporary reports of the broadcast were published August 21, 2024. LateNighter, TheWrap, and TVLine described the incident.
What Colbert said the protesters were objecting to
Colbert acknowledged the disturbance, telling viewers, “For people at home who can’t tell, there’s a protest going on in the audience right now.” He said he would address the subject after the commercial break.
After the break, Colbert summarized the protesters’ objection as opposition to U.S. arms supplies to Israel, which they said were being used to kill people in Gaza. His on-air wording, reproduced by LateNighter, was: “They’re saying that The United States should not have any role in supplying Israel with arms to kill the people of Gaza. That’s what they’re saying.” TVLine also reported that a protester shouted “Free Palestine!”

How Pelosi responded
Pelosi said Israel had a right to defend itself and called for the return of hostages. She argued that peace required a two-state solution. TheWrap reproduced her statement: “You cannot have peace unless you have a two-state solution.”
How the interview ended
Shouting continued during Pelosi’s response. Colbert then asked the audience, “Please don’t interrupt my guests,” as TVLine reported, and ended the interview. The reports describe the people who interrupted as pro-Palestinian protesters; they do not establish their identities, a precise number, or an organizational affiliation.
