She was taken to La Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital and underwent emergency surgery, but was declared dead at 0300 BST. The later Operation Paget inquiry concluded that the available evidence showed no conspiracy to murder the car’s occupants.
What happened after the crash?
The Royal Household’s account says Diana was taken to La Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital, where she received two hours of emergency surgery. She was declared dead at 0300 BST on Sunday, 31 August 1997. The official summary establishes that she survived the crash long enough to reach the hospital and receive treatment; it does not provide a verified, minute-by-minute account of her final moments. The Royal Household’s biography of Diana gives this account.
What is established about the crash?
The Royal Household dates the crash to shortly before midnight on Saturday, 30 August, in the Place de l’Alma underpass in Paris. Operation Paget’s overview says Diana, Dodi Fayed and bodyguard Trevor Rees-Jones left the Ritz at around 12:20 a.m. on 31 August in a Mercedes driven by Henri Paul. Dodi and Paul died in the crash; Rees-Jones was seriously injured.
Operation Paget reconstructed the Mercedes as hitting a kerb near the thirteenth pillar at an estimated 61 to 63 miles per hour—about twice the speed limit for that section. That figure is the inquiry’s estimate, not an independently measured certainty. The report also notes that the exact events at the end of the journey were for the inquests to decide. The Metropolitan Police Service’s Operation Paget overview, published on 14 December 2006, describes the reconstruction.

What did Operation Paget conclude?
Launched in January 2004, Operation Paget assessed whether credible evidence supported allegations of a conspiracy to murder the occupants of the car. Its overview concluded: “Our conclusion is that, on all the evidence available at this time, there was no conspiracy to murder any of the occupants of the car. This was a tragic accident.” The finding is the inquiry’s conclusion about the evidence it examined.
What is not verified about Diana’s final moments?
The official accounts establish the crash, hospital treatment and time of death, but do not substantiate an exact quotation from Diana or a complete account of her final minutes. Claims about her precise words, private thoughts or scene-level details should not be treated as verified on the basis of these sources.
