The Associated Press quoted Smith recalling his answer as, “she’s doing well, thanks.” ITV News published a slightly fuller version of the exchange: “She’s doing well thank you, yes.”

The accounts differ slightly in wording and punctuation, but both report the same brief answer: William said Kate was doing well. The Associated Press report and ITV News’s account were both published on May 10, 2024.
What he said about the children
In ITV News’s account of the same visit, William said the children were “very jealous” that he was on the islands without them. He added, “Maybe we might come later in the year.” The remark was about the family potentially visiting the Isles of Scilly; it did not give a confirmed date or plan.

Why this was not a detailed medical update
William’s answer was a short public remark, with no clinical details about Kate’s condition or treatment. At the time, contemporary reporting said Kate had announced an undisclosed cancer diagnosis and begun chemotherapy. The May 10 exchange does not establish her health status now.
A separate comment in Newcastle
William had made a different remark on April 30, 2024, outside James’ Place in Newcastle. Asked how he, Kate and their three children were doing, he replied, “We are all doing well, thank you.” ABC News reported the exchange on May 1. That family-wide answer came ten days before the Isles of Scilly visit; it is not the same as the later answer specifically about Kate. ABC News’s report covers the Newcastle exchange.
