Prince William rode on horseback at the King’s Birthday Parade on 14 June 2025. The Royal Family’s event report identifies his horse as Darby and says William wore the Welsh Guards uniform, the regiment for which he is Royal Colonel.
Who rode on horseback, and who travelled by carriage?
William rode with the Duke of Edinburgh and the Princess Royal. Each attended on horseback as a Royal Colonel, wearing the uniform of their respective regiment.
| Royal attendee | Horse | Regimental uniform |
|---|---|---|
| Prince William | Darby | Welsh Guards |
| Duke of Edinburgh | Sir John | Scots Guards |
| Princess Royal | Noble | Blues and Royals |
The King and Queen travelled from Buckingham Palace to Horse Guards Parade in an Ascot Landau. The Princess of Wales and her children—Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis—followed in another Ascot Landau. That placed the mounted Royal Colonels and the royal carriage party in different parts of the same procession; the reported account does not give a medical reason for the King’s mode of travel. The Royal Family’s 14 June 2025 event report records the participants, horses and carriages.
Why was William wearing Welsh Guards uniform?
William wore the Welsh Guards uniform because he is the regiment’s Royal Colonel. His role in the parade was that of a mounted Royal Colonel, not the Sovereign or the bearer of the Colour.

The Colour is a regiment’s flag. In the ceremony, it is carried through the ranks after the inspection and musical troop. The Household Division’s ceremony guide describes the broader sequence: the Sovereign’s inspection, the Colour’s procession through the Foot Guards, marches past at slow and quick time, the mounted troops’ ride past, and the return procession to Buckingham Palace.
